FRIDAY 10 Glasgow

I Sonia. Big Fun. Sinitta and London Boys Barrowland. 2-1-1 Gallowgate. 552 1601. The big one. with. ofcourse. the omnipresent Pete Waterman in attendance. Unfortunate that it‘s the dross ofthe PWL stable. not the best.

I Inspiral Carpets Strathclyde L'niversity Union. 901ohn Street. 552 1895. 9pm. £3. The latest sound of young Manchester -- but are they as groovy as the Roses and the Mondays? Go along and find out.

I The Shamen Glasgow School of A rt. 167 Renfrew Street. 332 0691 . 8pm. Nowon One Little Indian. and with a new single in the shops something special is promised for this gig in the way of lights and music. Attendance may suffer at the hands ofthe similarly influenced Inspiral Carpets.

I Lulu and Gerry and the Pacemakers Pavilion Theatre. 121 Renfield Street. 332 1846. 7.30pm. Lulu is apparently one of the stars helping to guide Glasgow into 1990. while Gerry and the Pacemakers deserve a mention even if they are well past pensionable age. Rickie Lee Jones‘ recent cover of ‘Don‘t Let the Sun (‘atch You Crying‘ is a poignant reminder ofa major songwriting talent.

I The Crows Venue. ~190Sauchiehall Street. 332 3872. 10pm. ()ne ofthose bands who have been around for ages. found a following in central Scotland and are unlikely to go much further.

I Garrison Saints and Sinners. 272 St Vincent Street. 221 527‘). ‘)pm. liarly evening entertainment for the dandruff-shaking brigade.

Edinburgh

I Kanda Bongo Man Assembly Rooms. George Street. 225 3611. 8pm. £5 (£3.50). Thanks perhaps to the better studios they're working in nowadays. Kanda Bongo Man's bands sounds even better than they did on the last-but-onc album. Amour I’ou. Rippling guitar figures and Zairean soukous rhythms extend an even more persuasive invitation to dance than even the Bhundu Boys did.

I Cutting Crew and Work Venue. (‘alton Road. 557 3073. Orders for the album at the quarter-million mark already? And they‘re playing a gig as low—key asThe Venue? Something strange going on here. for sure. See album review.

I Avalon Preservation Hall. Victoria Street. 2263816. £1 after9pm. Renowned local folk-rockers.

I Live Music Basin Street. 1 layrnarket Terrace. 337 1006. 8pm—midnight. Local unsigned talent.

I Shibboleth Negociants. Lothian Street. 2256313. 9.15pm. Free. Is that the right spelling? Is that the right hand?

I The Rootsies Duo Globe. west Port. 22*) 1311. 10pm. Jim (‘ondie on guitar and Ron Tait on vocals and harmonica rtm through blues. gospel and R8; B.

SATURDAY 11

Glasgow

I The Wedding Present Barrowland.2-1~1 Gallowgate. 552 1601. 7.30pm. Top Motherwell footballer Nick (‘usack rcccomends them! And even more sensationally. The Wedding Present have been claiming in interviews that they really dislike the Buzzcocks. Sothere.

I Billie JD Spears Pavilion Theatre. 121 Rentield Street. 332 1816. 7.30pm. Who needs New Country?

I Baby's Got a Gun Saints and Sinners. 272 St Vincent Street. 221 527‘). Retro rockers. who know how to write a decent tune.

I The Wolfgang Flutt Experience Blackfriars. 36 Bell Street. 552. 5981. 9pm. Free.

Edinburgh

I Napalm Death. Morbid Angel. Carcass and Bolt Thrower Calton Studios. Calton Road. 556 7066. A package of the biggest names in Peelcore. and one that could possibly entice me along. though I've tended to steer clear of these occasions in the past. Though Morbid Angel isa mystery. Bolt Thrower's sessions have impressed. (‘arcass deserve some sort of praise for putting together the most revolting accident-victim sleeve in history and Napalm Death have brought an exclamation mark to the whole genre with their second-long single.

I The Crows and The Steve Doherty Band Bedrock ('lub. Venue. ('alton Road. 557 3073. The ex-Zcro Zero frontman supports [Edinburgh's hard-lovin‘. axe-totin' rock heroes. Wonder ifthey'll be taking a few tips at Livingston l-‘orum later in the month?

I Sharlot and The Rogues ( '1'B(‘) Negociants. Lothian Street. 225 6313. 9.15pm. Free. Deranged and very funny psychobilly act worth catching.

I Blueiinger Platform ()ne. Rutland Street. Rock'n'roll-influenced pop from a group with impressive (‘V of band and session work.

I The Block Brothers Preservation 1 lall. Victoria Street. 2263816. £1 after9pm. I The Rootsies Duo linsign liwart. i ligh Street. 225 7110.1)pm. l-‘ree. See Fri 10.

I Mary Margaret O‘Hara and The Liberties Queen‘s 1 Tall. South (‘lcrk Street.668 201‘). Only Scottish date. See Preview. Support. The Liberties. grew out ofthe ashes of the covers band The Dan Blocker Iixperience. and now let their songwriting light show through. Talented and professional country act. with The Proclaimers‘ management behind them. I Lulu and Gerry and The Pacemakers Usher 1 Iall. Lothian Road. 228' 1 I55. 8pm. “11.511.528.50. See Fri 10.

I The Shamen (‘alton Studios. (‘alton Road. 556 7066. More than just a gigis what we're promised from The Shamen. touring on the back of their ‘()mega Amigo‘ single. Indeed. they're trying to build a club atmosphere with every gig. bringing I)Js. extensive lighting. lasers and all kind of‘psychotronic' gobbledegook to make a four or five-hour party of the occasion.

I Drunken State Moshpit. Venue. ('alton Road. 557 3073. 7.30-- l lprn. ()neof Scotland's most popular thrash bands.

I Keeping Still Preservation Hall. Victoria Street. 2263816.

I D-Day Negociants. Lothian Street. 225 6313.1).15pm.1-‘ree.

MONDAY 13 Glasgow

I Drunken State Moshpit. Rooftops. 92 Sauchiehall Street. 332 5883. The Moshpit comes to Glasgow! Let's celebrate! The idea of going to see metal on a Monday night does not appeal. lam sure the dedicated will love the idea. though.
