WEDNESDAY 29 Edinburgh

I Swing Out Slster Queen‘s 1 lall. South Clerk Street. 668 2019. Currently learning the intricacies of Saturday morning kids' shows. Swing Out Sister recall an era of The A vengers and The Prisoner rather than an era of timeless songwriting. which seems the more likely intention.

I The Mutiny Strings and Pride Finsbury Park. South St Andrew Street. 556 1020. 9pm. £1. Very commercial and charty. but sadly faceless. pop from Pride. and something that wee bit rawer fromThe Mutiny Strings. whose new demo is very catchy indeed. and augurs well for live work.

THURSDAY 30 Glasgow

I Agata Kristie. Kollegian Assessor. Ne Zhdali and The Beat Poets Rooftops. 92

Sauchiehall Street. 332 5883. 9pm. £5 (£4). Glasgow's Beat Poets have somehow surfed on to this New Beginnings presentation of three Soviet bands. With their theatricality and two lead singers. Ne Zhdali sound closest in spirit to the excellent Avia. who played at Mayfest. but For no doubt entirely wrong. Kollegian Assessor and Agata Kristie are both hard rock bands. from Kiev and Sverdlosk respectively. only Agata Kristie

apparently formed as an ‘art‘ band in 1985.

and rejoice in the attractive-sounding label ‘1 lard Wave‘.

I Primal Scream and Teenage Fan Club Glasgow College of Technology. 70 (‘owcaddens Road. 332 7090. Students and guests only. Somewhat disappointing that they're not playing in a more public venue one would hope that after several years and some highly-acclaimed records. their profile in Scotland would be bigger than it is. but that's the new psychedelia for you. Teenage Fan (‘lub is a B MX Bandits offshoot. and if that hasn't sent you running for the hills. you‘ll probably enjoy it.

FRIDAY 1 Glasgow

I Adamslti Sub (Tlub. 22 Jamaica Street. 248 4600. Still awaiting solid confirmation of this one. but it‘s a probability. as the 1)] has a new LP. entitled Live and Direct with imaginative flair. and recorded ‘in a field somewhere‘.

SATURDAY 2

Glasgow

I Erasure S1i(‘('. Finnieston ()uay. 248 3000. SOLD OUT. lirasure is a band most people made their minds up about long ago. And as the reception for their new album shows their success is not a flash in the pan. we can't help reflecting that no one is better at being [Erasure than Erasure themselves.

I Paul Johnson Strathclyde University Union. 90 John Street. 552 1895. 9pm. Students and guests only. Why hasn't the man who only a year or so ago was hailed as the great British soul gospel voice become a household name yet‘.’ It‘s nicer to believe it‘s because of his own principles and high standards than that his record company jumped the gun without justification.

I Uriah Heep and Metraux Mayfair. 490 Sauchiehall Street. 332 3872. Why. I‘ve found myself wondering frequently over the last year. have I been chosen asthe target for so many records. photos and press releases of a band that has had no relevance or interest for anyone. in Western Europe at least. for nigh on 15 years'.’ And now. with the announcement of Uriah lleep's Mayfair gig. it's allsprung into horrifying focus. Help.

I Loop and Lush Queen Margaret Union. University (iardens. 339 9784. 9pm. Loop's cyclical riffs (get a Stooges record stuck in a groove for five minutesand you'd get the same effect was my initial reaction) haven't done them any harm— indeed. in British indie circles. they're close to megastars. I‘m more interested. however. in recent 4A1) signing. Lush. whose Sear mini-LP is one of the more essential purchases ofthe last few months
