GLASGOW Fridays

I Joy at the Sub Club. 11pm—5am. £3. Pulsating house rhythms. melodies. beats and basslines. Feel the heat as you dance your cares away in the ultimate busy. sweaty. sticky atmosphere. The best night of the week for house in Glasgow.

I Radio City at the Mayfair (Cameo Suite). l()pm—3am. £1.50. Radio (‘ityhas been quite a success story that seems to have gone unnoticed by most people. Populist they ain't. but ifyou‘re intolate 60s psychedelia and rock (and 80s as well) this is the best place. as countless Glasgow Uni students will also tell you.

I Shag at Fury Murrys. l lpm—3.30am. £1.50. 12in white label imports from Chicago at Shag are about as rare asa sighting of Mo Johnston in Glasgow‘s pubs and clubs recently. Don‘t expect tosee ‘super' Ally or any other football ‘stars‘ frequenting Shag as there will be no Luther Vandross or George Benson either! What there will be is pure lovable pop (especially early 80s) amongst an unpretentious. mixed fun-loving crowd. DISCOS

Saturdays

I Bennets 11pm—3.30am. £3. Glasgow‘s best gay disco (well. its only!) has moved on in recent times from playing exclusively Hi-NRG to a mixture ofall high bpm dance sounds. Currently very popular is ltalia disco. Balearic beats and the many derivatives that make up ‘house‘. Look out for suprise special guest PAs. I The Choice 11pm—3.30am. £4. The most exclusive venue on Saturdays has all the new fashion collections by the likes of Hamnett. Basi and Gaultier on video for you to drool over. Make sure you‘re dressed up to the nines as well or you could be disappointed. Upfront dance mixed by Segun. Lars and your host Colin Barr. I Detect at Fury Murrys. 11pm—3.30am. £3. Student sounds at Furys on Saturdays. This doesn‘t say much for students taste in music. Obvious fodder you‘d rather forget about. obvious funky 70s sounds and obvious chart music every week. Those who go do seem to enjoy themselves though. I Heller Skelter at the Mayfair. 11pm-3am. £1 .50. NOT a Heavy Metal night thank you very much. but cult heavy rock favourites from the late oils. early 70s when ‘guitar solo' was not a dirty word. I Insomnia at the Warehouse. 11pm—3.30am. £4. Insomnia is attractinga

very young. wild crowd just now. with only one thing on their minds. . .dancing! Any vacant space inside has someone in big white trainers bobbing around tothe loud. thumping. commercial house.

I Sub Club 11pm—5am. £4. lf Bennets on a Tuesday is already a Glasgow institution. then the Sub Club on Saturdays isn‘t far behind. For well over two years it has been the most fashionable venue and consistently busy. UFO could pose a threat to their dominance in 1990 however.

I 2 Hip and Mixed Up at PanamaJax. 11pm—3.30am. £3 before midnight. £4 after. ‘2 Hip for garage. funk. house and hip-hop. ‘Mixed Up' for chart. soul and alternative. Two clubs running simultaneously.

I UFO at Tin Pan Alley. 11pm - 5am. £5. This is more like it. a good house night. Hacienda DJ Jon Dasilva will be appearing every week with Graeme Park and Mike Pickering making thejourney North once a month.

Sundays

I Buckwild at Tin Pan Alley l0.30pm—3.30am. £3.50. 1 still think the admission is a bit steep for a Sunday but the drinks prices are easily the cheapest in town: 60p pints. 40p spirits. 40p liqueurs. The DJ is one ofGlasgow‘s finest. Segun, and there are PAs to look out for too.

I Club Fantasy at The Choice. 11pm—5am. £3. Run by Darren. Kevin & DJ Oscar— ‘essentially pumped-up vibes for a happy. mental crowd'. Treat your ears to the 4k sound system and your eyes to the 4x4 video wall.

I Discordia at Peggy Sue's. 10.30pm-3am. £2. Fortnightly. run on the first Sundayof the listings. Discordia can probably claim to cover the most musical styles of any of Glasgow‘s clubs. Go in with an open mind and groove on down to the likes ofFront 242. Dead Kennedys. De La Soul. Ramoncs. Happy Mondays. Bad Brains and . . .Motorhead! Where'sthe acid house. though. lads?

I Oblivious at Henry Afrikas. 8pm—3.30am. lfyou‘ve heard too much house recently or ifstuffiike Deacon Blue and the Waterboys appeal to you go along. I Underground at Fury Murrys. 11pm—3.30am. £1. With entrance onlya measly quid. Tequila Slammers at 50p, groovy funk. soul and disco from the 705. effervescent Latin and the odd club classic from more recent times. you would think the Brown Paper Bag boys would be onto a winner. but no! When you should be fighting for space to dance (and air) but it‘s all too easy. and the odd bad choice bythe DJ clears the floor. you know something needs to be done to add some atmosphere. but what? Answers on a postcard to Underground. C/O Fury Murrys.

Tuesdays

I Boys, Boys, Boys at SW1 . £1 .50 (50p with a ticket) What‘s the next line again? ‘l‘m looking for a good time.’ Says it all really. BBB is an alternative night. No, this doesn‘t mean they‘ll be playing the latest indie faves but their clientele is a mixture of gay and straight. A good mixture of anything considered to be dance music shall be spun by the DJ.

I Lovecluh at Peggy Sue’s. 10.30pm—3am. £1.50. File alongside Freewheelin‘l suppose, groovy pop cult faves from different eras to shake your floppy fringe

to.

I Shimmy Club at Bennets. 10.30pm—3am. £1 . Quite simply, the Shimmy Club isa Glasgow institution. For years. the straight night has been attracting people from all walks of life just wanting to relax and have a good time. The 605 soul. after. Worth going early. methinks!

Thursdays

I Blackmarket at the Sub Club. 11pm—3.30am. £2. My favourite ofthe Slam Crew‘s three nights at the Sub isJoy. but if the music at Blackmarket doesn't quite reach the high standards of Fridaysit makes up for it in atmosphere and mobility (ie it isn't quite so busy! ).

I Fury Murrys 11pm—3.30am. Live music sessions with disco. Check Rock listings for band details and prices.

I Terra Hera at the Mayfair. 11pm—3am. £2. Terra Nera suffers from the same problem as Underground . . . brilliant music (Latin. reggae. African. soea. etc). but the atmosphere is virtually non-existent. A club like this needs intimate surroundings. but l‘m afraid the Mayfair is as intimate as a breezy barn. The potential is there though.
