The List's 1989 demo competition draws to a close. The announcement of the result has been delayed by an unexpected deluge ol tapes which, happily, was at a much higher quality and greater diversity than in previous years. Matters were not helped by the nervous collapse ol one at the judge’s tape decks, which relused to right itsell until alter the boxes at demos were long out at sight, and the straying ol one tape which was eventually to prove crucial. Everyone who included SAEs
‘ will have theirtapes returned overthe
nextlew weeks.
The winning band is Glasgow‘s ‘very surprised' Big Strauss, who have the
makings at a band that will do their city proud. Graham and Brian McLaren, Jamie Wilson and David Taylor have been together only a year, but they can still boast ot around 50 songs written and arranged to a decent standard, two

McEwan’s Demo Disco in their lirst weeks on the chart. Big Strauss plan to do a two-week British tour, in March/April. ‘There isn't a lot to say because we haven’t done anything.‘ Not yet, perhaps, but there’s a lot you can do with three days’ lree recording and mixing at Tower Studios in Glasgow and £400 ol instruments or equipment lrom Sound Control music shops.
Runners-up Kith and Kin, from Edinburgh, had the good lortune to be leatured in our last issue, though even then they had no inkling ol their glorious award-winning tuture. They will be able to claim a whopping £250-worth ot strings and those liddly
bits lor accordions trom Sound Control.
Last Minute are comparatively unknown, buttheir eclectic and dizzying tape earned them enough at the judges‘ admiration to bring them in
to third place. Alour-piece, also trom Edinburgh, they can claim £100 at f equipment lrom Sound Control. The
