I Bobby Veo and The Searchers Usher Hall. Lothian Road. 228 l 155. 7.30pm. From the old school. we‘ve lost Del. but Bobby lives on. even after abandoning his stage name for his real name of Velline in the 1970s in an attempt to shake offthe kitsch associations of his 60s hits. But classics they remain ‘Rubber Ball'. ‘Take Good Care of My Baby‘. ‘The Night Has a Thousand Eyes‘ even if Vee‘s big break launched him into the spotlight by default (his group was hurriedly used to replace Buddy Holly after the latter‘s fatal plane crash). I The Blue Aeroplanes Venue. Calton Road. 557 3073. 9pm-midnight. Note early start. The REM comparisons are well-worn. especially after their support status on the American band‘s tour last year. but to those you could addthat of The Go-Betweens. of whom much ofthe Aeroplanes‘ new album. Swagger. brings to mind. (I haven‘t heard too many Bristol bands. Paul Glass ofGalashiels. but l'd rate them above the drivel Head have come out with since they signed to Virgin.
