MUSIC LIST/JAZZ

TUESAY 6 Glasgow

I 0840 SECC. Finnieston Quay. 248 3000. UB40 seem to have lost their spirit after the death of core member Earl Falconer. Whereas the early records captured the buoyant charm ofpals that simply enjoyed playing music together. lately they sound fat. lazy. uninspired and bored. 1 believe their latest release is an album entitled Cashing In On Cover Versions. but 1 could be wrong.

I The Acoustic River Detectives Cumbernauld Theatre. 7.45pm. £5. Part of a season of Scottish music at the Cumbernauld. Should be interestingto see Sammy and Danny-boy on theirown. I The Fat Lady Sings Studio. 12 Shuttle Street. Paisley. 889 6867. See Mon 5.

I The Thin Men The Shelter. 7 Renfrew Court. 332 6231. Energetic rock that‘s probably been shaped by The Clash at some stage. but shows a wider range of influences than that. if that sounds like your bag. then there‘s no reason for you 'not to go along.

I Blow-Up Minstrel's. 66 Broomielaw. Cherry Red Records have picked this lot up. after several independent releases over the last few years. and have already released a breezy and rather good single by them. entitled ‘Forever Holiday‘. Support is not yet confirmed. but it is hoped that Perspex Whiteout will play. I Swing and Melanie Mciiattie Napoleon‘s. 128 Merrylee Road. 637 5238. See Tues 27. Melanie McHaffie is a young soul/gospel singer with a very powerful voice but lacks strong material to back it up.

Edinburgh

I Spandau Ballet Playhouse Theatre. Grecnside Place. 557 2590. 7.30pm. £12. £10. They haven‘t got rid ofTony Hadley yet. the main obstacle to my ever enjoying anything of Spandau‘s.

I Carmel Pavilion Theatre. 121 Renfield Street. 332 1846. Touring behind her uneven fourth album Set Me Free. Carmel probably comes across better live than on vinyl (or CD. whatever your poison).

The River Detectives and Kev McDermott. among others. have turned up forinformal sets. and if no one ‘of note' feelslike turning up. there‘s always someone around to play.

I Rollin' Joe Gillespie's. 26 Cheapside Street (off Broomielaw). Residency.

Edinburgh

I Summerhill and Work Venue. Calton Road. 557 3073. Summerhill haven‘t really gone out of their way to escape the REM comparisons that have dogged them thus far. judging from the material from their forthcoming album. but somehow that doesn‘t seem to matter anymore. Perhaps they‘re just naturally and without fuss outgrowing their influences. lfthey haven‘t had a Texas-sized hit by the end of the year I‘ll be most surprised. but lwon‘t eat my hat if 1 can in any way avoidit.

I The Shamen Wilkie House. Holyrood Road. 556 8455. Ever the aspiring dancefloor artistes. The Shamen recently started their ‘hypnotronic‘ club Synergy in London.
