LISTINGS

GLASGOW Fridays

I Joy at the Sub Club. 11pm-5am. £3. Pulsating house rhythms, melodies, beats and basslines. Feel the heat as you dance your cares away in the ultimate busy. sweaty, sticky atmosphere. Still the best night of the week for house in Glasgow with Orde, Stuart & Harri.

I Parade at Fury Murrys. 7pm-11pm.

£1 .50. The pre-Shag under 18 club will feature the usual mixed bag of sounds (and Graham‘s 13-year-old brother who will be getting trained to be a Shag DJ of the future!) There will be buses after totake you home to the South Side and West End. I Radio City at the Mayfair(Cameo Suite). 10pm—3am. £1.50. Long running psychedelic rock club still doing the ‘biz‘ as we say. Stuck in a bit of a time-warp, but good none the less.

I Shag at Fury Murrys. 11pm—5am. £1 .50. Time for the proper Shag! (amazing how the novelty value of their name never wears off.) Proving extremely popular with the students with their diverse playlist and tacky freebies.

Saturdays

I Bennets 11pm-3.30am. £3. Glasgow‘s best gay disco (well. its only) has moved on in recent times from playingexclusively Hi-NRG to a mixture of all high bpm dance sounds. Currently very popular is Italia disco, Balearic beats and the many derivatives that make up ‘house’. Look out for suprise special guest PAs.

I The Choice 11pm—5am. £6. The most exclusive venue on Saturdays has all the new fashion collections by the likes of Hamnett, Basi and Gaultier on video for you to drool over. Make sure you‘re dressed up to the nines as well or you could be disappointed. Upfront dance mixed by Segun, Lars and your host Colin Barr.

I Detect at Fury Murrys. 11pm-3.30am. £3. Student sounds at Furys on Saturdays. This doesn‘t say much for students‘ taste in music. Obvious fodder you‘d rather forget about, funky 705 sounds and chart music every week. Those who go do seem to enjoy themselves though.

I iielier Siteiter at the Mayfair. 11pm—3am. £1 .50. NOT a Heavy Metal night, but cult heavy rock favourites from the late 605. early 705 when ‘guitar 5010‘ was not a dirty word.

I Insomnia at the Warehouse. 11pm—5am. £5. Insomnia is attracting a very young, wild crowd just now, with only one thing on their minds . . .dancing! Any vacant space inside has someone in big white trainers bobbing around to the loud,

thumping, commercial house.

I Sub Club 11pm—5am. £4. 1f Bennets on a Tuesday is already a Glasgow institution , then the Sub Club on Saturdays isn‘t far behind. For well over two years it has been the most fashionable venue and consistently busy. UFO could pose a threat to their dominance this year however.

I 2 Hip and Mixed Up at PanamaJax. 11pm-3.30am. £3 before midnight, £4 after. ‘2 Hip' for garage, funk, house and hip-hop. ‘Mixed Up‘ for chart, soul and alternative. Two clubs running simultaneously.

I UFO at Tin Pan Alley. 11pm-5am. £5. Graham Wilson & Nick Peacock are DJing on the first floor with their club 52, featuring rap, garage, funk andjazz; everything except house ‘cos that will be happening upstairs as UFO runs as normal with Adrian, Lars and Harri.

Sundays

I Buckwlid at Tin Pan Alley 10.30pm—3.30am. £3.50. The admission is still a bit steep for a Sunday, but the drinks prices are easily the cheapest in town: 60p pints, 40p spirits, 40p liqueurs. The DJ is one of Glasgow‘s finest, Segun, and there are live PAs to look out for too.

I The Dream at Scalini. 11pm—3.30am. £2. DJ David Gray brings you hip house, techno and drinks promotions (Sol/Simpatico 50p per bottle, Vodka/Whisky/Gin 65p per measure).

Apologies to Freewheelin‘ as 1 stated they were behind this club in the last issue. Tuesdays

I Shimmy Club at Bennets. 10.30pm-3am £1 . Quite simply, the Shimmy Club is a Glasgow institution. For years, the straight night has been attracting people from all walks of life just wanting to relax and have a good time. The 605 soul, R&B, alternative and ska spots are still as popular as ever and the house section is beginning to attract a following as well. OTHERS

I Rhythm ’n' Booze at the Cotton Club. 11pm-3.30am. £2 (£1 with ticket).

Wednesdays

I Hardcore at the Choice. £3. 11pm—3.30am. No white trainers here thank you very much. Hardcore is proving popular with the ultra-trendy & more mature clubbers with excellent house & rap, drinks promotions and fashion shows. I Jeans a T-ahirt night at the Cotton Club. 11pm-3am. £3.50. Another popular Wednesday night club playing dance, but of a more commercial nature than Expansions & Hardcore (and not so elitist).

I Psychotic Reaction at the Mayfair. 10—3.30am. £1 .50. Typical Mayfair club, so that means teen trash, 605 psychedelia, psycho pop, garage punk and, just to be slightly different, Atlantic/Stax soul. Worth supporting though.

I 80a B "is Right at Mardi Gras. 10.30pm—3.30am. £2 (£1 with ticket).

Thursdays

I Blackmarket at the Sub Club. 11pm-3.30am. £2. My favourite of the Slam Crew’s three nights at the Sub isJoy, but if the music at Blackmarket doesn‘t quite reach the high standards of Fridays it makes up for it in atmosphere and mobility (ie it isn‘t quite so busy).

I Terra Hera at the Mayfair. 11pm—3am. £2. Still running despite my reservations about the venue, and still attracting the most diverse crowd in the city. Great music to dance to—Latin, Reggae,

' Rhumba, Calypso, Soca—but when will the

mixing improve?

EDINBURGH Fridays

I Barrio Negro Network 210.30pm—4am. £2.50. Forget Carmen Miranda and groove on down to laid-back Latin, jazz and soul at this increasingly popular club. A pleasant change from mega K PAs, in‘ the best East Coast tradition.

I Dream The Mission 10pm-3am. £3. Upfront House fusion mixed by Edinburgh's Dream and some of Glasgow's Slam crew. Using the venue and music selection to its fullest, look out for the £1 entry leaflets bearing that by now familiar Chanel rip-off logo. Time for a change perhaps, boys?

I Green Banana Club Potterrow 8pm—lam. Students 50p with matric card, guests £1 . A 'stimulating‘ student night, playing alternative indie thrash. Not forthe faint-hearted or discerning Clubber.

I U.F.O The Venue 12pm—4am. £2.00. Covering contemporary dance music across the board, from On-U sounds to Mancunian ravers The Happy Mondays and The Stone Roses, occasionally crossing into House and Techno. Worth checking out if you are into the more alternative end of dance clubs.

I Marley: Shady Lady‘s 10.30pm—3am. £2. Living up to its name the club plays mostly MOR reggae to a mostly older crowd. So what did you expect?

I Spanish Harlem Wilkie House. One of the busiest clubs springs back after their spot of bother. 015 Colin David and Yogi share the floor with guest DJs from all over Britain. Professional and lively but for how much longer?
