CLUBS LIST

LISTINGS

GLASGOW Fridays

I Crash at the Cotton Club. 11pm-3.30am. £4 (£3 with ticket). Popular & busy, with a wide variety of club sounds, particularly Indie/dance crossover which is going down so well just now. I Joy at the Sub Club. 1 1pm—5am. £3.50. Scotland‘s best night for House? Certainly a contender. Wild music in a highly charged atmosphere. Who would have thought you‘d ever hear Primal Scream at Joy? I Orange at The Choice. 1 1pm-5am. Another new club from Colin Barr, which will get away from the previous ‘chart music for Pzazz types’ to fit in with all their other nights. I Radio City at the Mayfair (Cameo Suite). 10pm—3am. £1.50. Long running psychedelic rock club still doing the ‘biz' as we say. Stuck in a bit of a time—warp, but good none the less. I Shag at Fury Murrys. 1 lpm-Sam. £1.50. Unpretentious disco-fun suitable for those who loved the pure pop songs of the early 805 or just want crazy fun. Personally speaking, I think it helps if your drunk . . . I Swirl at the Art School. 11pm—2am. £1.50. Colours swirl, patterns collide , sounds reverberate perfect pop, garage grunge and 605 - 90$ psych . . . I Unity Reggae Club at Rooftops. 10.30pm—3am. £2.50. A very under-rated club this one. Reggae is supposed to be making a comeback. I certainly don't mind hearing more if it‘s as good asthe UCR's playlist. OTHERS I The Alhambra 8pm—midnight. Free. I Bonnets 11pm-3.30am. £2.50. I Cleopatra: 10.30pm-2.30am. £3. I Follies 10.30pm-3.30am. £3.50. I The Future at the Warehouse. 1 1pm—3.30am. £4. I Hard Rock Cane at the Venue. 10pm till late. £3.50. I Hollywood Studios 11pm-3.30am. £3.50. I Mleitey Finn's at Tin Pan Alley. 10.30pm-5am. £2 before midnight, £4 after. I Mr O’s 10.30pm—Zam. £4. I Panama Jax llpm—3.30am. £3. I Parade at Fury Murrys. 7-11pm. £1.50. The Shag under l8club. I Battles 10.30pm-3am. £3. I Rumble at Joe Paparazzi. llpm—3.30am. £3 (£1 Student). I Savoy 11pm—3.30am. £4. I Stomp at Mardi Gras. 10.30pm-3.30am. £3.50. I SW1 11.45pm—5am. £1.50.

Saturdays

I Bennets llpm—3.30am. £3. Moved on in recent times from playing exclusively Hi-N RG to a mixture of all high bpm dance sounds. Currently very popular is ltalia disco, Balearic beats and the many derivatives that make up ‘House'. Look out for suprise special guest PAs.

I The Choice llpm—Sam. £6. The most exclusive venue on Saturdays has all the new fashion collections by the likes of Hamnett, Basi and Gaultier on video for you to drool over. Make sure you’re dressed up to the nines as well or you could be disappointed. Upfront dance.

I Detect at Fury Murrys. 1 1pm—3.30am. £3. Student orientated sounds at Furys on Saturdays. Very popular if obvious choice of records, but who am 1 to criticise?

I SLAM! at the SECC. 8pm-8am, £15. 31 Mar only: 3000 people go absolutely apeshit for twelve hours. See preview.

I Sub Club 1 1pm-5am. £4.50. Thanks to Rachel & Clare for letting me know about this entry. The evergreen Sub Club, eh? Saturday is the only non-Slam! night and it

gives other DJ 5 a chance to prove themselves. Expect to hear lots of different club & dance sounds. Still very trendy and worth checking out.

I UFO at Tin Pan Alley. 11pm-5am. £5. Seriously upfront in the House stakes. All the young ravers love this one , but do you love all the young ravers?

I Hallelujah at the Sub Club. 11pm—3.30am. £1.50. Change of name, but still run by Stuart and Orde. Music policy won’t be so ‘housey' as Fridays, giving welcome relief for those who still appreciate hip-hop, funk, and other types of music around just now.

I Hypnetonic Soundtrack at Fury Murrys. £2. Recognising the fact that most indie kids are now into dance music, here comes the perfect club to fill the gap in the market. The dance music has a harder edge than others, but there's 'still room for more traditional indie faves.

I Network at the Choice. llpm—3.30am. £3.50. Trying to establish itself as THE trendy venue on Sundays, with top name DJ 5 and the best in club PAs.

I Tin Pan Alley llpm—3.30am. Confusion! Tin Pan Alley break the mould of havinga regular Sunday club, opting instead for one-offs of their most popular nights. OTHERS

Wednesdays

I Hardcore at the Choice. £3. 11pm-3.30am. No white trainers here thank you very much. Hardcore is proving p0pular with the ultra-trendy and more mature clubbers with excellent house and rap, drinks promotions and fashion shows. I Jeans 41 T-shiri night at the Cotton Club. 11pm—3am. £3.50. Another popular Wednesday night club playing dance, but of a more commercial nature than Hardcore (and not soelitist).

I Psychotic Reaction at the Mayfair. 10pm—3.30am. £1.50. Typical Mayfair club, so that means teen trash, 605 psychedelia, psycho pop, garage punk and, just to be slightly different, Atlantic/Stax soul. Worth supporting though.

Thursdays

I Blackmaritet at the Sub Club. 11pm—3.30am. £2. My favourite of the Slam Crew‘s three nights at the Sub isJoy, but if the music at Blackmarket doesn‘t quite reach the high standards of Fridays it makes up for it in atmosphere and mobility (ie it isn't quite so busy).

I Terra Here at the Mayfair. l 1pm—3am. £2. Still can‘t believe this is the only clubin

Glasgow playing world music on a regular basis. Oh well, Latin, Reggae, Rhumba, Calypso, Soca. ldon‘t suppose there’s any chance of introducing a bit of funk is there?

Fridays

I Barrio Negro Network 2 10,30pm—4am. £2.50. Forget Carmen Miranda and groove on down to laid-back latin, jazz and soul at this increasingly popular club. A pleasant change from mega K PA’s, in the best East coast tradition.

I Beatbox Teviot Debating Hall 9pm—2am. (Students and guests only.) FREE. Pseudo-trendy student disco playing the kind of slick, soul-boy fare that appeals to Edinburgh‘s sideburned fraternity. Downstairs however, in the intimate surroundings of the Park Room, another (better) club takes place. featuring the relentless pulse of indie dance such as the Beloved.

I Dream The Mission 10pm-3am. £3. Upfront House fusion mixed by Edinburgh‘s Dream and some of Glasgow‘s Slam crew. Using the venue and music selection to its fullest, look out for the £1 entry leaflets bearing that by now familiar Chanel rip-off logo. Time for a change perhaps. boys?

I Green Banana Club Potterrow 8pm—tam. Students 50p with matric card, guests£1. A ’stimulating’ student night, playing alternative indie thrash. Not forthe faint-hearted or discerning Clubber, though if hard core goth is your scene . . . I U.F.O The Venue 12pm—4am. £2. Covering contemporary dance music across the board, from On-U soundsto Mancunian ravcrs The Happy Mondays and The Stone Roses. occasionally crossing into House and Techno. Worth checking out if you are into the more alternative end of dance clubs.

I Harley: Shady Lady‘s 10.30pm—3am. £2. Living up to its name the club plays mostly MOR reggae to a mostly older crowd. Just what did you expect?

OTHERS

I The Amphitheatre 10pm—4am. £1.75 before llpml£3.50 after.
