Double Oscar winning life story of paralysed painter and writer Christy Brown. lovingly adapted from his autobiography of the same name. Sheridan and screenplay writer Shane Connaughton have portrayed Brown warts and all to create a funny. touching and thoroughly absorbing movie with four quite excellent central performances. and a celebration of a remarkable person. Nielsen plays a disaster-prone LA cop assigned to find the men who shot his colleague in a drugs bust. and protect our dear Queen at the same time. while also finding time for romance with secretary Presley. The makers of Airplane here operate on a similar principle: keep it fast. keep it marvellously dumb. and the comic dividends will eventually flow. While rarely reachingthe heights of their l94lls output. the film is still strongly cast and its eye-catching washes of colour make it an enjoyable. if insubstantial. cinematic Confection. Cobb's dominating influence in the New York dockcrs' union leads only to tragedy for Brando's ex-boxer Terry Malloy in this early masterpiece of the Method school. Despite an injection ofover-obvious religious symbolism. Budd Schulberg's politically contentious script and Kazan's typically involved direction offered a launchpad for one of Brando‘s best screen performances. This is where you‘ll find the original ‘I coulda been a contender' monologue later so effectively taken up by Scorsese De Niro in Raging Bull. Strathclyde: Paisley Arts Centre.
