I Big George and the Business King‘s Court. 7 Osbourne Street. 552 2250. Very popular local blues band who have just released their independent debut The Alleged Album.

I The Wheel Queen Margaret Union. University Gardens. 339 9784. 10pm. Glasgow hard rock band that is relatively new on the scene.

I Roclthouse Trader's. (ilassl‘ord Street. 552 5826. 10pm. Free. Live rock musicin some capacity.

I The Stretcheads PS'F(‘lub. Studio. Shuttle Street. Paisley. 8896867. 10pm. £1. Noisemakers of some repute definitely an acquired taste. but it‘s nice to see them start to get some attention around the country.

Edinburgh

I Fatima Mansions and The Band of Holy Joy Venue. Calton Road. 557 3073. 9pm—midnight. Fatima Mansions' (led by ex-Microdisncy frontman (‘athal Coughlan) excellent first single ‘()nly Losers Take the Bus‘ is recommendation enough for this gig. And The Band ofl loly Joy‘s dizzying rush of accordions and strings. fronted by the hyper Johny Brown is worth catching any night of the week. An excellent double-header.

I Elephant Noise. Better Backwards and The Complications Moray House Student Union. Holyrood Road. 556 8455. And a rather good triple-header here. too. for those keener on catching tip on what‘s happening locally. Opinion seems to be unanimous that Elephant Noise's latest demo isn't as immediate as the last. but that‘s not to say their newer songs aren‘t going to be growers. (‘ertainly worth trying. Better Backwards seem to be groping towards something quite interesting too. and unusually for around here aren‘t afraid to try out something different.

I The Spooks Edinburgh University Student Union. Teviot Row. 10.30pm. Students free. guests 50p. (‘ome early to this one. because it will be packed. as ever. The Spooks are a bunch of lovable moptops born too late for Monkeentania. and their pastiches are often sharp. always funny. Changing from their matching suits into more individual garb. they play a second. more psychedelic set. in which we see the influence ofthe dreaded ‘pot' sneaking into the Prefab Four‘s songwriting. Good between-song banter as well.

I The Refugees Preservation I lall. Victoria Street. 226 3816. £1 after 9pm. The Refugees. fronted by the agreeably batty Fjaere Nilssen. have excited a great deal of interest among all the right people. Fjaere‘s voice hits almost Kristin Hersh-like notes at times. but her music is rooted in country. blues and rock‘n'roll. I The Radium Cats (TBC‘) Basin Street. Haymarket Terrace. 337 1006. 8pm—midnight. Edinburgh's best-known psychobillies. Seek out their IiP Munster Madness. which might still be found.

I The Great Junction Street Band Trading Post. The Shore. 553 5153. 9.30pm. Free. Quality mainstream melodic rock. served up by a talented pool ofmusicians. probably holding most appeal to those who feel they‘ve outgrown their thunderous rock collections.
