STRAMASH, GOAL!

match in Europe, 147,000 packed into Hampden Park in 1947. lorthe linal between Celtic and Aberdeen.

The Tennents’ Scottish Cup this year enters a new era. There will be no Arthur Monttord to compere the televisual least that accompanies it. Were it not that the two most consistently successlul cup sides of the 80s, Celtic and Aberdeen are involved I doubt whether I would be able to bring

mysellto watch.

For the legions of Celtic tans this has been a less than happy season. Their delence is presently so suspect it‘s doubtful whether even Perry Mason would handle it. Nor have their strikers been able to do anything to dispel the current pall that hangs over Parkhead. The nadir of their season was surely reached last Saturday when, while they could only scrape a draw at Motherwell, the champagne corks were popping over at Ibrox. Indeed their sole successes have come in the Cup, yet, thereby hangs a straw of hope. Fortunately, it’s not the only one the ’Tic have to clutch at. Billy Stark quietly slipped back into the team against Motherwell, after an absence of eight months and Dariusz Dziekanowski suddenly remembered where the goal lay.

Aberdeen meanwhile, have managed an altogether more consistent season. Though ultimately failing to match Rangers, theirteam has maintained a more established pattern than Celtic’s. Having already won the Skol Cup they can be quietly confident at doing the drinks double. But, as every lootball pundit knows, Celtic and the big occasion go together like, well, like ‘stramash’ and ‘goal’. (RP)
