EDINBURGH Fndays

I Beatbox Teviot Debating Hall 9pm—2am. (Students and Guests only). FREE. Pseudo-trendy student disco playing the kind of slick. soul-boy fare that appeals to Edinburgh‘s sideburned fraternity. Downstairs. however. in the intimate surroundings of the Park Room. another (better) club takes

place. featuring the relentless pulse of indie dance such as the Beloved.

I De-Lux Wilkie House 10.30pm—3am. £3. From 11 May. An upfront dance club featuring DJ‘s from Spanish Harlem and North. and playing the same kind of music. Should establish itself as the place to be seen before long. and deservedly so. I Dream The Mission 10pm—3am. £3. Still run by the Slam and Dream crew. still mixing upfront house fusion. still full of kids in big white trainers. But. wait for it— they‘ve got new flyers! And rather groovy they are too. in a lurid psychedelic sort of way. But it's a start.

I Floral Riot Network 2 10.30pm—4am. £2. Experience an indie explosion ofsonic flower grooves at what is currently Edinburgh‘s busiest club. From Primal Scream to The Pastels. from The Smithsto The Stone Roses. a carefully considered playlist is ensuring a packed dancefloor. I Green Banana Club Potterrow 8pm—lam. Students 50p with matric card. guests£1. A ‘stimulating' student night. playing alternative indie thrash. Not forthe faint-hearted or discerning clubber. though if hard core goth is your scene . .. Look out for live bands too.

I U.F.O The Venue 12pm-4am. £2. Upfront cuts ranging from indie dance to house to techno, with a Euro/US hardcore influence. Hyper-bass. sound effects and sampling. Or so they tell me.

I Marleys Shady Lady‘s 10.30pm—3am. £2. Living up to its name the club plays mostly MOR reggae to a mostly older crowd. A smaller crowd too. oflate. though with the supposed upsurge in popularity of this kind of music you never know what might happen.

I North Wilkie House 10.30pm—3am. £2.50. May 4 only. On the sixth day. so they say. God created Manchester. And there came forth from that place wee men with wide trousers and silly haircuts. who wrote songs about ‘twisting my melons‘ (man). And this is where to go to hear those songs.

I Infinity Oblomovs. 9pm—1am. FREE. Billed as a pre-club ‘club' mostly playing

house and techno courtesy of DJ ‘5 Bootsie. Kasi M and Brainstorm. Mixing it live on a Saturday night. check this out. I Immigrant Club Shady Lady’s. 10.30pm—3am. £2. Following in the footsteps of the Backroom, the Immigrant revamps this venue‘s history for hosting Independent music mixed with classic bands like SLF and the Ramoncs. Still a popular Saturday option.

I Mambo Club Network 3. 10.30pm-3am £2 members/£2.50 non members. Sir Ossie on the wheels of steel mixingthe best in African dance with calypso and soca around the world stylee.

I Parade Wilkie House. 1 1pm—3am. £3 (students £2.50). Getting more popular by the week. as Edinburgh clubbers realise that it is a serious dance club instead of a poor man‘s Shag. Playing a refreshing mix of mainstream rap, garage. house and funk and with a perpetually packed dancefloor.

I Power The Mission. 10pm-3am. £3. Following in the footsteps of the long-running Kangaroo Klub. this aims to banish the prevalent sense of fashionable elitism which exists in city clubbing by featuring swing beat and house in a less style-conscious atmosphere. Current dance sounds. a massive 9.5k turbo rig. live rapping and guest DJ 5 should make this as compulsory as Friday nights at Wilkie House. Essential stuff!

VVednesdays

I Breathless Potterrow. 8pm—1am. Students 50p with matric card. guests £1.50. Breathless continues not only to draw a good student crowd but also encompasses more up-to-date sounds. combining Prince. Electribe 101 and De La Soul for a night that is perhaps the best of its kind. Maybe the fact that they have the cheapest bar prices in town helps it retain a sense of fun.

I Loaded The Mission. 10.30pm—3am. £2. See preview.

I Lite Shady Ladys. 9.30pm—2am. £2. From May 9. Bit ofan unknown quantity this one. I‘m afraid. but they do have the lnsipid Carpets cow on their flyers. so 1 ‘d hazard a guess at music with a Mancunian bias.

Thursdays

I Chateaux Cha Cha Blue Oyster Club. 10.30pm—3am. £2.50. Designer gear ahgo-go at this stylish club which combines the best of both the gay and straight scenes under one groove. Suffering a steady decrease in popularity though - Roxy‘s days would seem to be numbered.

I Atomic hl-NRG Attack The Penthouse. 8pm—1am. FREE. If you thought that hi-NRG ended with ‘So macho' . then think again! DJ‘s Dave and Adam play the hottest new imports. and if you don't burn out after that they also include some chart and dance music to ensure you do.
