CLUBS

GLASGOW ' Fridays

I Mambo Clinic Barbizon Restaurant. 13 July only. 9pm—2am. £2. Latin andjazz. Tequila and beer promos.

I Dream at Papa Doc's. Cumbernauld. 10pm-3am. £2.50. Club entrepreneurs The Freedom Association launch an attempt to make something of a nightclub hitherto rather a ncd's paradise. An ambient atmosphere is promised. with all sorts of clever lighting effects. projectors and strobes to accompany the interesting mixture of house and Balearic beats. Chill out. man.

I Joy at the Sub ( 'lub. llpm-5am. £3.50.Though still one of (ilasgow‘s most popular clubs. Joy's been a little quiet of late. but sortie special events and guest Dis are promised tt » liven it up duringthe summer months. There may be a heavier emphasis on their dance and house roots. I Rumble at Joe Paparazzi. 10pm—-3.30am. £3 (£1 .50 student ). The tacky excesses ofloe Paps are morethan compensated for by superb mixing and an excellent choice of dance music which skilfully manages to avoid the obvious. Devoted to serious hopping. but watch out for the laser show too.

I Three Amigos at Tin Pan Alley.

llpm- late. £4 (£1 with leaflet ). Aimed squarely at the student population and playing new wave indie -~ the Charlatans. Cud and .lamcs are reference points this newish club is more ‘traditionally alternativc'. less 'tcchno-house dance'. Whether the summer hols will prove to be the best time to get a studenty club offthe ground remains lobe seen.

Saturdays

I Atlantis at Sub Club 11pm ~5am. £5. More news about the now -inlamous Stone Roses visit to this august venue . .. unreliable sources tell me that the lads. after a little difficulty proving their age at the bar. spent the night importuningthe DJ to play ‘Tilizabeth My Dear' and were unsurprisingly turned down. Doubtlcss the chic Atlantis crowd wouldn‘t have stood for such rock‘n‘ rol antics.

I Burnout at Rooftops. llpm-late. £2.50. [was impressed by Burnout. which hasa healthy policy of putting unsigned bandsin the cosy club atmosphere of the Secrets lounge (including plenty of soft sofas for those who frug too w ildly to collapse on). Music is primarily indie faves. with aslight emphasis on the Manchester scene; some have been reminded of the KesClub. More developments and bigger bands are promised soon.

EDINBURGH Fridays

I Dream Mission. 1 lpm—321m. £3 (£1 admission tickets circulating). Now no longer the only Friday dance club. but still a worthwhile option. DJ Bootsy spinsa hot mix of funk and soul. drawingon classic pre-house tracks to keep the dancefloor packed. whilst avoiding reliance on the obvious.

I Floral Riot Network 2. 10.30pm—4am. £2. Full ofindie kids flopping theirfringes to the likes ofJames. Stone Roses and other current faves. The playlist is moving steadily towards an up-to-date dance orientation. but still includes the odd classic from a few years back such as ‘Velocity Girl‘ every week. Popular and deservedly so.

I Fuse Calton Studios. llpm-4am. £3.50. The newly refurbished ‘post-industrial‘ Studios play host to the inimitable Yogi's latest venture. Along with DJ Craig. heis spinning house and garage downstairs. reggae upstairs. I Marley: Shady Lady's. 10.30pm—3am. £2. Reggae is THE sound of the summer. and this might just be the club to convince the crowd that a slower music tempo does not necessarily equate with an empty dancefloor.

I Zappa Wilkie House. 10pm—3am. After the success of its midweek slot. Zappa tries to capture the weekend clubbers with its ‘strangely strange. oddly normal‘ blend of 605 and 70s tracks.
