. w ~ 93$! {95:3, k 3“ I White Peak, Dark Peak, Stills Gallery. The work ol the English photographer Paul Hill is Ieatured in the Festival exhibition at Stills. White Peak, Dark Peak is a photographic exploration ot the Peak District where the photographer lives and works. Hill makes the viewer conscious oi the constantly changing qualities ol the topography, geology and aesthetics oi the landscape. Continuity is seen in the repetition oi nature and the human and animal marks on the landscape.
The photographs are like a visual diary ol seasonal llux as Hill’s camera captures a moment in time in the hills, valleys, lields and rocks ol the countryside. Cycles oi lite and death, nature's way, are seen in his images oi dead and decomposing badgers. Dead hares, atlected by variations in snowiall which cut oil their Iood
supply, ar
photographed in stark, unsentimental terms.
The lay oi the land is reflected not only by the lolllng slopes ol Iields bounded by drystane dykes, but also by the places where badgers' runs intersect and cattle tracks are imprinted upon. Lines are marked by the contours at light, the shadows ol trees as they tail on the sparse winter ileld or the lertile grass oI summer.
Hill records the marks ol the movement oI animals and the bounded spaces created by human need to construct photographs ot the landscape which do more than mirror its natural lorm. Like an unsentimental, mythic walk, the marks and textures in the photographs are detailed and subtle as they capture the moving drama ol nature. (Lorna J. Waite)
