I Roll Thrower Moshpit, Venue. Calton Road. 557 3073. 6.30—10.30pm. Behind the wonderful name there lurks one of the top thrash bands in the country. whose first John Peel session led to a recording contract with Vinyl Solution. and who collaborated with fantasy game specialists The Games Workshop on their second LP. Realm of Chaos.

I Trio Lligo Hill Street Theatre. Hill Street, 225 7294. 12.10am. £3(£2.50). Until 1 Sept. An acoustic trio(they switched from electric instruments after busking in Scotland in 1988) from the far north of Sweden. Trio Lligo will. among other things, be playing songs from the LP Bulldozerballader. which had the media in their home country scrambling over each other for superlatives. "they‘re selling copies of their single about America at the gig. be sure to pick up a copy as it‘sin English and very funny.

I Bluelinger Platform One. Caledonian Hotel. Rutland Street. 225 2433. 9pm. See Sat25.

I The Lost Soul Band St James Oyster Bar. Calton Road. 557 2925. 9pm. Free. Going up in the world, it would seem. They‘ve cancelled all other non-entrance fee gigs except this one.

I Yothu Ylndl St John‘s Church. Princes Street. 3.30pm. £4 (£3). Until Sat 1. Playing their traditional set this afternoon. See Fri 24.

I The Rootsie Tootsie Band. Vatican Shotgun Scare and The Firing Squad Venue. Calton Road. 557 3073. 10.30pm. £3. The first of three nightly shows at The Venue put on by new local promoters Streets Ahead showcases some extremely diverse bands. from blues-rock to the more challenging indie sounds ofVatican Shotgun Scare.

I Eyes of Rita Leadbelly‘s. South Clerk Street. 662 4371 . 8.30pm. Free. Well worth seeing this Glaswegian psychedelic pop band. who have a handful of out-of—kilter. ‘difficult‘ even. songsthat owe more to the early Pink Floyd era than to their indie-dance contemporaries.

I Fat and Frantic Big Top. The Meadows. 2294118. 3.30pm. £5(£3). Thispopv‘skiffle band. who come with Simon Mayo's seal of approval. and have been described as a cross between Madness and ‘The Housemartins on speed‘. return to the Fringe for two daysonly.

Barrowland. 244 Gallowgate. 5524601. 7.30pm. £6.50. Tickets from Just the Ticket. Virgin. Union Street. 2264679. Soporific MOR dressed up in a psychedelic headscarf in order to appeal to Grateful Dead devotees or maybe just to get the green vote. Dan the Man will be expecting a good turnout. ridingon the back of his ‘Rainbow Child’ success. so someone must have read his manifesto.

I Dawson. Pregnant Neck. The Keatons and The Ex Talk of the Town. 46 West George Street. 332 3000. Noel Edmonds fetishists and John Peel favourites. Dawson seem to be wandering further from their speed-metal beginnings with every passing skateboard championship. Their days of 8-song. lS-minute sets may be over. but their intriguing blend of alarmingly disparate influences still makes them one of Glasgow‘s more original exports. The addition of I lolland‘s premier anarcho-punks The Ex is a late one. so there‘s only space here to remind you to look for their newly-released Dead Fish mini-LP.

I Blue October and Second Nature The Shelter. 7 Renfrew Court. 332 6231 . 10.30pm. Free. Despite playing melodic rock. Blue October are keen to distance themselves from other Glaswegian bands with much the same approach. They‘ve not been around too long though. so comparisons. however unfavourable. may be rapidly drawn.

I Acoustic Jam Studio. 12 Shuttle Street. Paisley. 889 6867. 9.45pm. Free. Turning out to be one of the Studio‘s most popular evenings and bound to continue on a regular basis in line with new venue policy of keeping the mid-week programme unchanged.
