It’s the Korean art of self-defence. Loosely translated, it means ‘kick-tist method' - establishing at once that it is a code of conduct, as opposed to the ‘kick-lirst’ method employed in playground scraps. Though not a million miles removed from karate it boasts a mare free-flowing style and some spectacular flourishes. The popularity of the ‘kick-flst method’ will be demonstrated on Sunday 2 September when 300 Tae Kwon Do-ers from Britain and Europe compete at the Kelvin Hall in Glasgow.
These days, the sport has a greater standing than ever after it finally gained Olympic recognition at the Seoul Olympics In 1988. The highlight of the Glasgow competition will be the Championship bouts between four black-belt international teams, Scotland, England, Holland and

Germany. Unusually the British teams will feature competitors from the Tae Kwon Do Association of Great Britain and the UK Tae Kwon Do Federation. This sporting gesture of unity has enabled members of both Associations to compete in the same team lorthe first time. The members of each team will light only two rounds each of two minutes’ duration, with a fifth member
performing a pattern and a special, and often spectacular, breaking routine. With a renewed interest in the sport- there are around 2000 participants in Scotland alone— and the competition coming underthe protective wing of the Festivals Unit in Glasgow, perhaps the ‘kick fist method' is getting the boost it needs.
