remem- Fridays

I Club Sandino at Tin Pan Alley. 11pm—4am. £3 (£2). 31 Augonly. The Sandinistas are by now long gone. but Club Sandino continues to raise money for the rebuilding ofNicaragua by playing excellent Latin. soul and jazz. Not many places treat the feet and the conscience simultaneously and remember it‘s only the last Friday of every month.

I Delirium 7 at Rooftops (Secrets Lounge). 1 1pm—late. £2.50. Gothic. glatn. grunge. go-go: don‘t take Gran. And in an inspired co-ordination with this blurb. this week‘s live battd are ~ wait for it - Gargleblud! (See Rock)

I Joy at the Sub Club. 1 1pm--5am. £3.50. Housey-housey in a sweaty. steamy atmosphere of serious dance and serious dancers. .\'ot a place for the tinco-ordinated. bttt great if you throw yourselfinto it. Elevate your mind. free your soul. get your T-shirt all smelly.

I Radio City at the Mayfair (Canteo Suite). 10.30pm~3am. £2. Whetherit's moving with the times or jumping on the bandwagon. Radio City is certainly a hell ofa lot different front what it used to be: no longer purely 60s. they now cater to the Manchester posse and even play straigitt dance records like Chad Jackson. The towering temperatures arid boorish bouncers are unfortunate minuses to an otherwise fine club. but definitely worth a visit for surprise value.

I Rumble at Joe Paparazzi.

10pm—3.30am. £3 (£1 student). Excellent mixture of rap. hip-house arid indie crossover dartce. and unlike many clubs we could name. the cavernous proportions ofJoe's mean that if you're choosy about when you dance. you can actually get through the night at a reasonable temperature 1 don't know about you. but I always consider this of vital importance when deciding where to go. Perhaps Fm gettingold.

I Shag at Fury Murrys. 1 1pm-~5am. £2.50. Time again for all you John Travolta fans to stand up. stick one arm in the air and be counted. lfJohn Waters came to Glasgow. he would definitely go Shagging. Watch his new film Cry Baby. or even better. Hairspray. then check otit Sltag arid you'll see what 1 mean. And watch out forthe ‘silly nights' the Shagget's have planned soonish -- shouldn't that be 'sillicr".’ OTHERS

'in‘ crowd. Entry requirements are a soupcon of pretension. a smattering of style. a sharp haircut and bags ofenergy— they come to dance until theirturtlenecks melt. and they don't mind paying a fiver every week. so it must have something.

I Burnout at Rooftops. 11pm—late. £2.50. Ah. close your eyes and you could almost be in the good old QM . . .solidindie faves. but to be honest. if I hear ‘I Wanna Be Your Dog‘ again. I'll start howling myself. The odd new release would be welcomed. and the Mancunian emphasis touted at the start seems to have fallen away a bit. However. that could all change soon. with the tantalising line-up ofgigs they have coming up; The Twist play on 8 Aug.

I Divine at the Art School. 11pm-2am. £1 .50. The early finish is a bit ofa burnnter. but the familiar. though not necessarily tiresome. blend of60s psychedelia and 80s indie provides the atmosphere that the horrid Vic cafe. with its rather free interpretation ofa dancefloor. doesn't. Plenty ofspace. not too busy. groovy sounds. uncomfy seats. beat girls. indie kids and hooded tops. that'll do nicely. thanks.

I Heller Sltelter at the Mayfair.

1 1pm—3am. £1.50. Recapture that authentic 60s seaside riot atmosphere as the city‘s mods and rockers fight to stay upright on a dancefloor the size ofa Twister board. The most confused clientele this side of the Shimmy. but at least they’ve cut down on the twenty-minute guitar solos.

I UFO at The Choice. 11pm—5am. £6. Steven Sleepman. the man who sounds like a character from an old morality play. brings his mega-successful techno. house and rave machine to Choiceland. Get down. get on up. etc.

this new rock clubthatorganiserJames

Flyte has decided to rotate them every few weeks. just to be difficult. Favourite thus far is the entry from a young lad called Cliffie. who modestly proposed calling it Cliffie‘s Place. Anything else they could do for you. .sir'.’ Co-ordinate the colour

scheme with your outfit. perhaps'.’

I Hypnotonic Soundtrack at Fury Mttrrvs. £2. See Panel. ' I The Power at the SubClub.

1 1pm— 3.30am. £2. Sunday's not traditionally a big night for clubs and hence The Power is not quite as busy as

other Subs. It‘s a bit of a hidden gem though. mixing reggae and ska into the usual dance inferno. and well worth missing Highway for. Mind you. so would defrosting your fridge.

I Sherbet Asylum at The Talk Of The Town. 10pm—3am. £2. This venue has undergone a bewildering series of aliases— the most recent being Peggy Sue‘s but strangely enough. it always seems to feature a club playing indie-kid pop and psychedelia; remember The Love Club? White mascara and lollipops are de rigeur. OTHERS

Butwlto else do you necd'.’ lfyou‘ve spotted anyone more impressive here. do let us know. Especially if they got drunk and danced to something embarrassing. Ten points extra if they were pop stars and it was their own record (ofcourse. Dave the Rave doesn't as yet have a record out.but ifhe did. . . it would probably belike Lloyd Cole doing a cover version of Lipps lne.'s ‘l‘ttnky’l‘ownd.

EDINBURGH Fridays

I The Brain Playhouse Studios. Greenside Place. 11pm—4am. £4(£2). The last weekend north for the Brain posse and a good one it should be too. Top l)Jsand live acts are promised. as well as the best dance music; house. fttnk. jazz. soul. hip hop. . . plus anything else they can digout. Attracts a mixed audience but spot the celeb is always an alternative activity if fighting for a space on the dartce floor with over 1000 hot and sweaty bodies gets just too much. Be warned be early orbc elsewhere.

I Dream The Mission. llpnt—3am. £3 (£1 admission tickets circulating). Edinburgh's only regular dance club. with DJ Bootsy spinning a hot mix of funk and soul. drawing on classic pre-house tracks to avoid reliance on the obvious. Experiencing competition from those London lads at the moment. but normal service will soon be resumed. they assure

I Floral Riot Network 2. 10.30pm—4am. £2. Full ofindie kids flopping theirfringes to the likes ofJames. Stone Roses and other current new-wave faves. The playlist is moving steadily towards an up-to-date dance orientation. but still includes the odd classic from a few years back. Undoubtedly Edinburgh‘s best club ofits genre for a long time - and still buzzing though the students are gone.

I Marleys Shady Lady+s. 10.30pm-3am. £2. Reggae is THE sound of the summer. and this might just be the club to convince the crowd that a slower music tempo does not necessarily equate with an empty
