ROCK & BLUES

well-deserved re-return there‘s a lot to be said for popular demand. Vibrant. energetic. unpretentious indie pop in the same vein as The Wonderstuff. but without their current dance hang-up.

I The Driscolls and The Groove Farm Halt Bar. 160 Woodlands Road. 332 1210. 9.30pm. Free. First in an extremely enticing pre-Christmas package at the Halt. Likeable pre-pubescent indie froth from The Driscolls and inspiring pop tunes from long-time indie favourites The Groove Farm. Standing room only tonight for sure. as Glasgow‘s anorak brigade converge on the Hall to sentimentally mull over old times.

I Live Music Tunnel. 84 Mitchell Street. 2041000. llpm. £6. We've been instructed to keep our mouths shut about this one or risk having our knuckles rapped. Suffice to say awell-known British soul star should be in the area tonight if she is. she’ll be appearinglive at the Tunnel.

I The Lezli R. Band and Yellow Earth Blackfriars. 36 Bell Street. 552 5924. 9.30pm. Free. Hue and Cry‘s keyboard player asserting a bit ofindepcndence. plus popular female acoustic duo.

I The Pat Travers Band Bedrock Club. Venue. Calton Road. 557 3073. Canadian guitar hero last decade’s Bryan Adams— boogies down.

I Lowlile Basin Street. Haymarket Terrace. 337 1006. The flagship ofthe Nightshift label. and its most consistent sellers. shifting units in marked disproportion to their coverage in the music press. Moody. sweeping. ambitious music. with Will Heggie giving it plenty of his distinctive bass.

I Deal Heights Stand Up and D once. Wilkie House. Caledonian cajun provides the musical element of tonight‘s cabaret. I Live music Amphitheatre. Lothian Road. Noon—2pm. The fourth of ten gigs at the Amp organised by Radio Forth. Tickets available from the Amphitheatre or by phoning up Radio Forth at the prescribed times. Bands not yet confirmed.

SUNDAY 18 - Glasgow

I Andy Taylor Tunnel. 84 Mitchell Street. 2041000. 10.30pm. £6.50. Tickets from Just the Ticket. Virgin. Union Street. 226 4679. No longer the tortured misanthropic one from Duran Duran. touringto promote his dire version of ‘Lola'. Haven‘t got a clue what the Brum restaurateur will be up to tonight.just limit the guitar solos. please.

I The Meteors Glasgow College. 70 Cowcaddens Road. 332 0681. 9pm. £4.50. Students and guests. The city‘s gig-starved psychobiliy population will be out in force tonight. holding their quiffs high. No matter where you stand at this gig. be prepared to fight to stay upright slamdancers aren‘t known for their grace. I The Pal Travers Band and Big George and

the Business Videodrome. 33—39 York Street. 221 0441. 8pm. £4. Rootsy guitar hero whose name will doubtless mean something to those in the know. ably supported by Big George‘s heavy blues sound.

I Compass Flow Altair 4. Rooftops. 92 Sauchiehall Street. 332 5883. 11pm. £2. Long time no hear from this band. who many moons ago made beautiful fragile indie pop as The Submarines. and more than likely haven’t changed their approach much. What is all this return of the anorak business at the moment - (‘-86 Resurrection Fortnight?

I Restless Natives and Prelixed Emotions Stigma. Tuxedo Princess. Anderston Ouay. 204 1150. 9pm. £2. As one would expect from a collective ofseasoned Scottish music scene veterans. Restless Natives make a traditional pop/rock sound in the Deacon Blue mould. Motherweil band Prefixed Emotions sound like an embryonic version of this sort of Waterboys meets Wet Wet Wet and are not surprisingly already attracting record company interest.

I Rhyme'n'Reason The Studio. 12 Shuttle Street. Paisley. 889 6867. 9pm. £1 .

MONDAY 19 Glasgow

I Shack King Tut‘s Wah Wah Hut. 272a St Vincent Street. 221 5279. 10pm. £3.50. Liverpool‘s shimmering. 60s-influenced jangle veteran Michael He'ad (erstwhile vocalist with the late. lamented and luscious Pale Fountains) may be pushing 30. but in his head he‘s nineteen and discovering harmonious pop for the first time. Totally fresh-faced and full ofnaive appeal. Not vicious or malicious. just lovely and delicious.

I Onslaught. Dead On and Crisis Videodrome. 33—39 York Street. 221 0441. 7.30pm. £4. Thrash. as one would expect from such a motley collection of band names.

Glasgow

I The La's Mayfair. 490$auchiehall Street. 332 3872. 8pm. £6. Tickets from Just the Ticket. Virgin. Union Street. 226 4679. More wide-eyed Liverpudlian pop. but less idealistic and with more street suss than Shack. At long last. ‘There She Goes‘ gets the chart placing it deserved when it first graced every self-respecting turntable in the country. Now all The La's need isan album that they 're as happy with as their adoring public.

I The Telescopes Videodrome. 33—39

York Street. 221 0441. 10pm. £3.50. One day. The Telescopes will command the audience they‘ve always threatened to attract. They‘ve got the musical capability to rein in a considerable following. whether they're delivering exhilirating feedback terrorism or heady reverberating swoons. but ifthey‘re going to join the likes of Ride in claimingchart honours. they‘ll have to do something about their erratic live shows. Occasionally brilliant.

I Free Base Shelter. 7 Renfrew Court.332 6231 . 9.30pm. Free.

I Hideaway Blues Band Curlers. 256 Byres Road. 334 1284. 9pm. Free. Residency. See Fri 9.

Edinburgh

I Del Amitri and Bloomsday Playhouse

Theatre. Greenside Place. 557 2590. 7.30pm. £7. £6. Relax. girls. they‘re married! Well. whether they are or not. the amount of touring they've been doing this year (including the USA twice . once headlining and once supporting Melissa Etheridge —- and Australia). they wouldn‘t have much time to devote to any other activities. Only one British date this year. Glastonbury. and it will be next summer at the earliest before their next LP. But if you miss this show. don't worry the Dels are playing the Barrowland in December.
