When thinking about party booze. bear in mind that what you really want is as much of the stuff as cheaply as possible. Almost all the High Street Chains — Augustus Barnett. Peteroominic. Haddows. Oddbins. Threshers. Victoria Wine — will give you a discount (usually 5 per cent) ifyou buy wines or beers by the case (wine 12 bottles. beer 24 bottles). Most will also deliver cases free locally. and provide ice, glasses and even dustbins.
You could do worse in Glasgow than the Ubiquitous Chip Wine Shop (round the corner from the famous bar and restaurant). which offers a five per cent discount on cases — mixed or otherwise — a delivery service and an extensive range of malt whiskies, older clarets. Belgian beers and sherries. h
Edinburgh‘s Wine Emporium offers sale or return. and is one of the few places in Scotland that will sell you alcohol on a Sunday. A wholesale warehouse open to the public. it has a minimum order ofone case. but with soft drinks and spirits as well as over 700 wines to choose from. this shouldn’t prove too much of a . problem. Wines From Paris can also sell wine on a Sunday, provided you‘re buying at least one case (mixed, if you like). They also supply delivery. free glasses. ice etc. . to keep everyone happy.

in Glasgow. The Barcelona will let you share its wonderful Catalan 1 atmosphere from Sundays to
Wednesdays. at a cost of£15 per
head upwards. Their special Christmas menu. which includes turkey stuffed with dried fruits and other traditional Spanish treats. will set you back £16.95 for four courses.
The Buttery will let you have a formal
dinner for £40 per head if you really feel like splashing out. Ifthe budget does not stretch that far. then downstairs in their bistro, parties of 40 or more can partake of their
Christmas menu at £12.50 a head.
Ifyou want somewhere all to yourselves. the Back Alley have an upstairs function room that can hold 25—30 people. There's no set fee for its hire. but a service charge of 10 per cent will be added to the bill. Their
' 4-course festive meal is £1 1 .50 per
head.
Across in the east. Chinese Home Cooking is the venue for many a riotous student gathering. Despite the fact that the dining room seems to be somebody‘s house, and you have to trek through the kitchen to get to the 100. the food is good and cheap and the staff are always friendly. if you want to bring a party. they‘ll be only too happy to shove all the tables together to accommodate you.
Pierre Victoire is renowned throughout the city for its wonderful
food at moderate prices. They have a
cellar which they will let you take over; their Christmas lunch costs £8.80. Bo’s also do a sumptuous lunch in an atmospheric setting for around £7 per main course.
