the Geysir area the Strokkur hot spring, which obligingly spurts boiling water 30 metres into the air every three minutes. Nearby are the almost equally renowned Golden Falls oqulfoss: a torrent ofglacial water which crashes into a large chasm.

Less visited than these is the Reykjanes peninsula, a hostile coastline dotted with abandoned settlements, and home to the Blue Lagoon (remember that strange MacEwan‘s Lager commercial?) This is unlike anything you‘ve seen - natural hot water used by a geothermal hydroelectric station mixes with sea water to create a large, opaque turquoise lake. There can be few stranger places in the

1 world to bathe: steam from the

power plant swirls constantly in thick clouds over the water, and the shiny steel tubing of the station looms overhead, giving a surreal, sci-f1 quality to the sparse surrounds.

The rest of Iceland is largely inaccesible; entirely uninhabited and consisting mainly of bleak grey lava deserts. This is commonly known as the ‘Interior‘. and is open to the

public for only six weeks each year. Independent travel through this area is a hair-raising undertaking and inadvisable. Tracks are at best rough and at worst just animal paths, marked by a few wooden stakes. Only 4-wheel drive vehicles are able to withstand such buffeting and cross the dangerous unbridged rivers and even these are liable to be swept away by the glacial current, as people discover to their peril each summer. The rule is, if hiring a car, to stick to the Ring Road Iceland’s only major route which takes you right round the country and through much of the most viewable geological activity.

But however you choose to do it, make sure that you don‘t leave Iceland without seeing the many natural phenomena. Expensive it may be, but no other country can offer such breathtaking, and often strange, scenery. Stay in Reykjavik by all means but venture further afield and take in the volcanoes, glaciers and hot springs. Nothing on earth compares, which is why the first lunar astronauts came here to train for their landing on the moon.
