I Sweet Addiction and SiealheartTimc Warp Rock Club. Venue. Sauchiehall Street, 332 3872. 9pm. £4. Sweet Addiction are a Manchester glammish rock band in the Def Leppard tradition. Stealheart make AOR-type soft rock with sweet, palatable vocals.

I Two Saints and The American Ruse Basin Street. Haymarket Terrace. 337 1006. Doors open 7.30pm. £2.50. Straightahead driving rock‘n‘roll from Boston‘s Two Saints, as befits former Johnny Thunders sidemen. Their new LP, 0n Bourbon Street, is raw blasting stuff that augurs well for live shows. And they‘re cool enough to cover Hank Williams too. Despite the name, The American Ruse are actually from Scunthorpe and signed, like Two Saints. to Shakin‘ Street and promise fierce rock in a similar vein.

I Head In The Sand Tap O‘Lauriston. Lauriston Place, 229 4041. Energetic and melodic local band another one whose name has mysteriously appeared on previously pristine walls.

I The Brothers Preservation Hall. Victoria Street. 226 3816. £1 after 9pm.

I Five Thirty Venue. Calton Road. 557 3073. Nifty psychedelic pop from the group that brought out the trippy ‘Air Conditioned Nightmare‘ a few months back a song so out-there in its daft Carnaby Street lyrics and so irresistible in its tunefulness that it surpassed many of the original 45s it paid homage to.

I The Lost Soul Band Pier 39. Custom House Quay Gardens. Clyde Street. 221 0865. Deservedly popular Edinburgh group. compared with Hothouse Flowers and the like, and pestered by record companies. playing a rare gig in the west. I Blue October Zutz Bar Cafe, Miller Street. 221 1604. 9pm. Free. Despitea gross lack of original ideas. Blue October‘s perky pop is so infectious you have to confess they‘re . . . quite good.

I Kindred Spirit Cafe Expresso Bongo. Quarry Street. Hamilton, 0698458174. 9.30pm. Free. Blues. See Tue 7.

I Billy Rivers Johnny Scobie‘s. London Road. 552 3204. Free. Rock and blues.

Edinburgh

I The Special Beat Calton Studios. Calton Road. 556 7066. What little we know about this gig suggests that it features ex-members of The Specials and The Beat the ones that didn‘t make it to further fame and fortune. Old-timers will get misty-eyed at the prospect, and why not? I Rhythm Chillun Chocolate City. Venue. Calton Road. 557 3073. Playingtonight at a club specialising in P-Funk and rare groove-type sounds. so their customary good reception might be a shade livelier than usual.

I The Pralines Moray House Student Union, Holyrood Road. 556 8455. So hard to define these tricky blighters. asthey keep reminding us. That they practise in a bakery apparently disqualifies us from saying they play garage pop. Don‘t get us wrong, whatever you call it, it‘s rather good.

I beat Heights Merlin, Morningside Road. 447 4329. Another group that present problems. Although they‘ve dropped the Cajun Aces part oftheir name for this gig. the original material they'play under the moniker DeafHeights is nonetheless cajun-tinged. The best around here at what they do. anyway.

I Bo‘Weevil Preservation Hall, Victoria Street. 226 3816. 9.30pm. Free. Blues, R&B and rock‘n‘roll.

I The Greaseguns Negociants, Lothian Street. 225 6313.

Glasgow

I The Fat Lady Sings Mayfair. Sauchiehall Street. 332 3872. 7pm. £5.50 plus booking

j fee. Tickets from Just the Ticket. Virgin. Union Street. 226 4679. With their current ' single. the simple but dull ‘Arc Light‘,

being pushed to death, it‘s probably only a matter of time before The Fat Lady Sings‘ spirited lrish pop/rock slithers into the charts. The likeliest of the current crop of Celtic hopefuls, but I could live without the pretentious vocal mannerisms Mike Scott does it better.

I The Stretchheads King Tut's Wah Wah Hut. St Vincent Street. 221 5279. 9pm. £3.50. Loved and hated in equal measure. The Stretchheads are probably the only crowd of Glasgow thrashers to have attained any degree of notoriety beyond

the city boundaries. Like a thrash version of Carter. their humour carries the day. but constantly threatens to swallow them whole.

I Walk Don’t Walk Crash. Cotton Club. Scott Street. 3320712. 11pm. £3 (£2). See
