The French bass player brings his award-winning trio. featuring drummer Aldo Romano and saxophonist Eric Barret. to Assembly Music‘s ‘Kind of Blue’ season (see Mayfest preview). For many people, though. the main attraction on the bill will be the solo performance from the extraordinary Brazilian percussion player Nana Vasconcelos. whose memorable Scottish appearances with Don Cherry. Jan Garbarek and Andy Sheppard have earned him a large following.

Holland leads what many people consider to be a prime candidate for the title of best contemporary jazz group around, and
with collaboraters of the quality of i saxophonist Steve Coleman. guitarist j i Kevin Eubanks and drummer Marvin ‘Smitty‘ Smith. who can argue. Not to be missed. See preview.

Modern Jazz Quartet

These days. the ‘Modern‘ is maybe ‘ something of a misnomer for these four : . veterans of the bebop explosion. Under ‘ 1 the guidance of pianist John Lewis. the E MJQ established a cooler. more 1 considered, and at times highly i compositional style which placed them in 5 line with the West Coast Cool School of 3 Baker and Mulligan or Dave Brubeck. rather than with the ferment of Parker and Gillespie. It was to prove a highly popular shift ofdirection. and the band remain one ofthe longest-running outfits in jazz I history. Lewis and vibes maesrro Milt Jackson lie at the core of their musical achievement. with fulsome support from bassist Percy Heath and drummer Connie ; Kay. who replaced Kenny Clarke in the only line-up change in the band‘s 37—year existence. Their music has grown a little polite for my tastes. but there is no questioning the standard of musicianship which they bring to their craft.
