I FRIDAY 17

' Glasgow

I Enutt Z'nuti Barrowland. Gallowgate.

552 4601. £6 plus booking fee. Tickets

from Just the Ticket. Virgin. Union Street. 226 4679. Versatile hard rockers

i from Chicago.

I The Milltown Brothers King'rut’s Wah Wah Hut. St Vincent Street. 2215279.

f 9pm. £4.50. Two shows for this recent La's

support act. proving that they‘re managing to progress unhurriedly. building on three minor hits all sounding like not-so-distant cousins ofeach other. and an album which contains gutsy chartbound pop with the ubiquitous Hammond organ breaks. Heard it.

I The Dylans and White Out Bay Hotel. Gourock. 0475 31244. 10pm. £3.30 (advance). £3.50 (door). Tickets from Rhythmic Records. Greenock. 0475 892736. The Dylans' new single ‘Lemon Afternoon‘ is hideously titled. but like the last single ‘Godlike’ has a distinct hook and a definite charm. lfthey keep toform. they might just manage to surmount the easy prejudice against their sparkling but utterly unoriginal indie pop. White Out are on home turftonight. but could easily build support for their Pink Floyd/Syd Barrett-drenched pop tunes wherever they play. Time is on their side.

I The Wild River Apples Crash. Cotton Club. Scott Street. 3320712. 10pm. £4

(£3.50with a ticket). Allis not gloom and

despondency in the Wild River Apples camp. despite their recent unceremonious ejection from the Chrysalis stable. One single may not be much of a legacy. but the band can still draw on a live reputation in Glasgow that stretches back a good few

years.

I Dolphin City Glasgow School of Art. Renfrew Street. 332 9797. 9.30pm. £2

(£1). A benefit for African famine relief.

I T. McD Traders. Glassford Street. Free. Flyweight funk-popsters. possibly

harbouring Steely Dan-like ambitions.

I Scuds Christie‘s. Main Street.

Alexandria ()389 57799. 9.30pm. Free.

52 The List radius 1991

1

Edinburgh I Curve and Basti Calton Studios. Calton Road. 556 7066. 9pm. Basti are more than

equal to the task of opening for the latest indie (or is it semi-indie) wonders. so pick

up a copy oftheir rather interesting album 5'

ifyou get the chance. On the strength of Curve‘s profile in the comics lately. this should be busy: and judging from their recorded output so far it will be just grand. Note change ofvenue.

I The Realm or The Shopping Trolley and The Probes Moray House Student Union. Holyrood Road. 556 8455. 9pm. £2.50. Winners of a statuette for being the most popular band in the 1990 Demo Discos. the Trolley boys celebrate with an ‘extra huge‘ lighting rig for this one. Planning further gigs around the country. possibly supporting The Cardiaes.

I The Blue Smarties Edinburgh University

Student Union. Teviot Row. Twee and rather young-sounding local group. reflecting a variety of influences but without much real punch.

I Eat The Seats Edinburgh University Student Union. Chambers Street. 8pm—lam. £2.50 (£2). Open toall. Stevenson College May Dance. kept hopping with Eat The Seats‘ bluesy rock. I Bockin' Blue Hound Dogs Preservation Hall. Victoria Street. 226 3816. £1 after 9pm.

i i i | l

Quay. 248 3000. £15 plus booking fee.

Tickets from Just the Ticket. Virgin.

Union Street. 226 4679. The most cars. the i priciest adverts. the biggest trousers. . .

hardly surprising that MC Hammer is such

Following the abrupt departure of guitarist and generally ace person. Pete Solowka. The Wedding Present will be touring with the assistance

' of Paul Dorrington (ex-AC Temple) this

time round. However. the new album Seumortsrers will be coming out as planned this month and will no doubt be packed with those demented pop gems we expect and love. Sec preview for Buffalo Tom.

I Spiritualized Toledo Junction. Crosshore Street. Greenock. Jason Pierce‘s Spiritualized may find themselves with an augmented audience these days. Following the death ofSpacemen 3. this offshoot is the obvious replacement in the ambient psychedelia stakes. Worth seeing for a game of ‘spot a flicker ofemotion on Jason‘s face'.

I The Helltire Club and Marsha Fresca Bedrock Club. Venue. Calton Road. 557 3073. Sure to be busy tonight. as Def America signings The Hellfire Club are made up of ex-members ofThe Cult (bassist Jamie Stewart). Zodiac Mindwarp and The Psychedelic Furs all good bands for at least some oftheir careers. but what sort of noise do they make now?

I The Dead Flowers and The Dtthoolts Basin Street. llaymarket Terrace. 337 1006. Basin Street welcomes back The Dead Flowers from Newcastle. but the lion‘s share ofthe punters will be there forThe Offhooks. now using the old Sharlot And The Rogues rhythm section. who. while slavishly moulding themselves to fit the template of the 60s garage beat group (with JJ Burnel on bass'?). nevertheless do it better than just about anyone.

I I New Fast Automatic Dattodils Mayfair.

booking fee. Tickets from Just the Ticket. Virgin. Union Street. 226 4679. The New FADS current single ‘Get Better'. remixed off their great Pigeonlmle album. is as good a point of introduction as anyto their quirky. funky indie pop. Rhythm is the key with bass and bongos almost as upfront as the relentlessly jangling guitars. Not the easiest of bands to get into. but worth it eventually. as witnessed live late last year at the Tunnel.
