I A Slice or Saturday Night Pavilion Theatre. Renfield Street. 332 1846. 8.45pm. £10.75. £9.75. The very lovely Gaz Glitter stars as Rubber Legs De Vine in a punchy. upbeat celebration ofthe glory days of rock'n'roll. when the men wore Edwardian jackets and the squares were nervous indeed. Prooftljat he can electrify a theatre without the aid of several hundredweight ofaluminium clothing.
I Gandyland and The chlr Inside KingTut‘s Wah Wah Hut. St Vincent Street. 221 5279. 9pm. £4. With an appearance at the Great British Music Weekend and a punch-up with Manic Street Preachers to augment their profile. Candyland were in a fine position to hype themse'ves into the charts a few months back. f familiar for their combination ofgrunge and dance. while Demo Disco favourites Supergroovalistic blend 70s funk with 905 techno (just for a change).
I Neetah Cheetah Christie‘s. Main Street. Alexandria. 0389 57799. 9.30pm. Free. Foul AOR rock boasting foxy female singer.
I Fishmonlreyman and The Ruby Suit Venue. Calton Road. 557 3073. 7.3(L10.30pm. Note early start. Major label worthies specialising in the epic. sweeping and swooping guitar pop that made some early 80$ bands so attractive. but now might be starting to wear a bit. The Ruby Suit must be feeling that they‘re wearing a bit themselves. having spent so long on the Edinburgh scene without making any progression other than in the strictly musical sense. That said. they're a better band now than at any previous time. I Cabaret Voltaire Pure. Venue. Calton Road. 557 3073. 11pm—4am. Members and guests only. Those pioneers of techno specifically requested a gig in Edinburgh‘s vastly-popular nightspot. The membership is now around the 2000 mark. a large proportion of which. I suspect. wouldn‘t know ‘Nag Nag Nag‘ if it hit them on the head. Incidentally. from mid-June. Pure will be running on Saturdays as well.

Add an innate ability to ‘craft‘ a simple. effective song. mix gently and — hey presto! - instant yuppie appeal and assured substantial album sales for all time to come. I Carol Laula. The Honeychurch and Murmur King Tut‘s Wah Wah Hut. St Vincent Street. 221 5279. 9pm. £3. Sincerity incarnate plus her usual posse hit the Hut. Don‘t they ever get sick ofthe sight ofeach other? I Flshmonlteyman The Dugout (formerly Toledo Junction). Cathcart Street. Greenock. 0475 27918. 10pm. £3.50 (£2.50 members). Tickets from Rhythmic Records. Greenock. 0475 892736. See Fri 31. I Zulu Syndicate Clubhouse. Old Sneddon Street. Paisley. 889 4706. 8.30pm. £2 (advance). £3 (door). Well fancied on home turf. this great Edinburgh rap crew attempt to prove a point in the West. At the upcoming Ayr rave. they‘re on stage with Professor Griff. I Anton And The Moon Harbour Arts Centre. Harbourside. Irvine. 0294 74059. 9pm. £2. Apparently the name on several record companies’ lips at the moment. I Elephant Noise Halt Bar. Woodlands Road. 332 1210. 9.30pm. Free. Edinburgh's Elephant Noise are determined to prove themselves impervious to comparison. so on the evidence of their forthcoming and highly listenable EP. here‘s another one to annoy them — The Railway Children. Strong commercial indie pop. I Live Music Blackfriars. Bell Street. 552 5924. 9.30pm. Free. I Splash Chisholm‘s. Shuttle Street. Paisley. 889 6867. 9pm. £1.50. Local pop band. I Mr Jones Tudor Lodge Hotel. Burnbank Street. Hamilton. 0698 457277. 9pm. £1 . I Face The World Christie‘s. Main Street. Alexandria. 0389 57799. 9.30pm. Free. Face The World hope to take the unusual step of producing a single later in the summer for Scotland-only release. Fairly commercial synth pop with sugary female vocals. I Rod Stewart. Status Duo. Joe Cocker and The Kevin Ncherrnott Orchestra Celtic Park. Kerrydale Street. 551 5864. £23 plus booking fee. Tickets from Just The Ticket. Virgin. Union Street. Glasgow. 041 226 4679 and Virgin and Ripping Records. Edinburgh. A gravel-throated spectacular. featuring Rod's gratuitous
patriotic self-indulgence. rather than the oft-parodied bum-wiggling of old. In this company. The Kevin McDermott Orchestra can‘t fail to shine.
I E.L.0. Part ll Playhouse Theatre. Greenside Place. 557 2590. There are still E.L.O. fans about. They write fabulous letters to the criminally undervalued Classic CD. defending a motley crew of E.L.O. . The Moody Blues and Sky against the briekbats of classical purists. and pointing out how much they have in common with the great composers.
ELO have now reformed
without Jeff Lynne. who
may have been the only reason anyone wanted to see them in the first place.
I Lisa Dominique and Dangerous Bedrock Club. Venue. Calton Road. 557 3073. Heavy rock songstress who hit back at accusations of bimbo-hood levelled by James Whale. and appeared on his show the other week — scantily-clad and singing a dreadful dirge that seemed to sputter out in the middle. I could be persuaded toside with Whale on this one.
I Honey Beretta and Nectar Basin Street. Haymarket Terrace. 337 1006.
I Meadows Festival Meadows. Melville Drive. 1.30pm. Free. Always a fine way to spend a Saturday afternoon. providingthe sun‘s out. Nick Robertson unveils his new band for the occasion. and also livening up the revellers‘ day (when they‘re not strolling round the stalls) are The Clumsy Lovers. The Fjaere Nilssen Band. Quantum Ho Ho and Kith And Kin.
I Those Women or The Vaudeville Blues Assembly Rooms. George Street. 226 2428. 8pm. £4 (£3). Marilyn Middleton Pollock re-creates the lives of such legendary singers as Bessie Smith. Ma Rainey. Victoria Spivcy and Sippie Wallace. A Spring Fling event.

SUNDAY 2 Glasgow
I Sllverlish. The Stretch Heads, Gallon Drunk and The Texan Chainstore Masochlsts Queen Margaret Union. University Gardens. 339 9784. 7pm. £4. Open to non-students. The loud. the brash. the heavy. the manic. the downright weird (and we‘ll leave you to decide which is which) club together in support of Amnesty International. The enigmatic (cough) Mary Byker DJs. so run for cover while there‘s still time.
I The Blessing King Tut‘s Wah Wah Hut. St Vincent Street. 221 5279. 9pm. £4. The Blessing are obviously much fancied as megastars by their record company ifthe current glut of promotion is any yardstick. but everyone else seems to be takingtheir
’ time warming to them. This may have
something to do with the fact that ‘Highway Five‘. currently the most played single on Radio I (and don‘t we know it)is overblown nothingness and their throaty vocalist William Tepley loves himself to a degree that the general public could never match.
I Lisa Dominique and Indian Angel Time Warp Rock Club. The Venue. Sauchiehall Street. 332 3872. 9pm. £4.
I The Lost Soul Band Harbour Arts
1 l I;
9pm. £2. Varied folk-influenced pop at its most infectious.
I Zulu Syndicate and The Orange Grove Hyper, The Hippodrome, Kilmarnock, 0563 21210. 10.30pm. £3. See Sat 1 for Zulu Syndicate. The Orange Grove continue to fend off a ridiculous amount of interest from all quarters and show exactly why their St Etienne-style grooves won them The List/McEwan‘s Lager demo competition. Dave Calikes and Chris Keegan DJ.
I The Way Out Chisholm's. Shuttle Street, Paisley. 889 6867. 9pm. £1 .50.
I The Answer Tudor Lodge Hotel. Burnbank Street. Hamilton. 0698457277. 9pm. £1 .
I Lawnmower Deth Moshpit. Venue. Calton Road. 557 3073. Self-parodicdeath metal band: fat people ridiculed. journalists abused. daft shenanigans acted out. hardcore versions of ‘Kids In America’ foisted on the punters. Make up your own mind about this lot.
I Bert Jansch And Peter ltirtley Pleasance Theatre Bar. The Pleasance. 5566550. 8pm. £5 (£3.50). Finger-picking blues and contemporary folk from the ex-Pentangler and friend. Please ignore the printing error in the Spring Fling programme which gives the impression that they are playing on Sat 1 as well.

TUESDAY 4 Glasgow
I Roachford and Honeychild Barrowland. Gallowgate. 552 4601. 7.30pm. £7 plus booking fee. Tickets from Just the Ticket, Virgin. Union Street. 226 4679. With the likes of Whycliffe for competition now. Roachford will have to sharpen up his act to avoid being just one of many young solo artists combining soulful vocals with a variety of mainstream influences. Fortunately he‘s a little less into the self-glorification angle than his rivals— with Roachford you go to see a band performing.
I Eyes of Rita and Ac Acoustics KingTut‘s Wah Wah Hut. St Vincent Street. 221 5279. 9pm. £1 . Although they're tryingto play it down. there are some gothic elements to what Eyes of Rita perform. and judging by Curve‘s current popularity that could be a distinct advantage for the group. Keeping things Glaswegian and alternative. AC Acoustics varied set compares very favourably with current indie darlings like Moose and The Catherine Wheel. Plus the demo disco.
I The Amazing Jimmy Brock Experience The Brewery Tap. Sauchiehall Street. 339
8866. 9pm. Free. The List 31 May- 13 June 19.97139
