EDINBURGH FHdays

I Beathox and Strangeways at Teviot Row Union. 9pm—2am. Students and guests only. Free. Huge union disco— I hesitate to use the word club where youngand impressionable student types go to consume vast quantities of snakebite and then throw up on the partner oftheir choice. On two floors. with chart trash upstairs and indie-dance down. The best thing about this is the happy hour. but they are however now in possession of a fairly large light show which may impress you. Or not. as the case might be.

I BoomTown at Wilkie l louse. 10pm—3am. £3. DJs Scott from Phase 1 and Gareth from Tribe Vibe play heavy tunes~ that‘s techno. hip hop and house to you and me. Also resurrecting the famous food bar upstairs. which will undoubtedly start the older. trendy types reminiscing about how good the Edinburgh club scene used to be all those years ago when Spanish Harlem was still running. . .

I Brain Club at Calton Studios (downstairs). £5. 31 May and monthly. London's finest venture north foranother night of upfront and in-yer-face dance tunes. Also featuring PAs but your guess is as good as mine as to who they will be.

I Dateless at The Mission. 10.30pm—3am. From 7 June. The name of this newclub suggests that it‘s directed at sad wee souls who find themselves all on their lonesome of a Friday evening but I'm assured that it‘s no such thing. An unknown quantity as yet. but seemingly playing Shag-type sounds. Well. that always manages to bring out the unloved. . ..

I Glider at 9c Victoria Street. 10.30pm—3am. £2.50. Open your ears to this Floral Riot reincarnation. which is proving just as worthy as its predecessor. With a playlist consisting mainly of assorted indie tracks. but venturing cautiously towards dance territory by the inclusion of the likes of Gary Clail and The Shamen. Busy. busy. busy. and deservedly so.

I Green Banana Club at Potterrow Union. 9pm-2am. Students and guests only. Traditionally an ‘alternative' night. with occasional live bands - in the past as diverse as That Petrol Emotion. The Bhundu Boys and the Proclaimers.

I Ital at Liberty's. 10pm—3am. £2.50. 31 May and monthly. It‘s back! Edinburgh's Ital (‘lub ran from '76 to '83. playingthe best reggae to a wildly enthusiastic crowd. Now two of the old promoters return with every intention of creating the same stir. Whether you're a natty dread or baldhead. their selection of roots. lovers. revives. due-jay and dance is bound toget you going. I

I Marley‘s Reggae Klub at Networkz. 10.30pm—4am. £2. A reggae night (surprise. surprise) still running after an incredible thirteen years. (‘an be a little retrospective at times. but nevertheless always busy.

I Madison’s Rock Night 9pm~3am. £1 before 10pm £2 after.

I Messenger Hi-Fi Sound System at Moray House Union. 9pm—3am. 7 June only: ragga. roots. lovers and heavyweight dub that's quality reggae to you and me.pltts a BIG soundsystem and cultural MC. The most upfront club of its kind in the city at

the moment. but will undoubtedly suffer a

decline in numbers due to the return of Ital.

I Millies 10pm -(iam. £2 before 2am. £3 after. Favourite late night hang out of clubbers. club runners and those who just won't go to bed. Dark. crowded and unbelievably tacky. but Slillftlhll/Ulu‘.

I Pure at The Venue. llpm~4am. Members and guests only. With a bpm count higher than the LS budget deficit. it's not hard to see why this has earneda reputation as Edinburgh's finest dance club of late. Surely several hundred ecstatic revellers can't be wrong‘.’ Cabaret Voltaire obviously think not - they play Pure on 31 May as a sole Scottish show. I Raw at Shady Lady‘s. 10.30pm—3am. Free on 31 May only: Rock night.

I Scream at (‘alton Studios (moves downstairs from 7 June). llpm—4am. Laid-back. spaced-out (ills sounds. man.

I Sha at Moray House Union. 10pm—3am. £2.50. 31 May only: ()oerr missus! ()ur predicted 70s revival moves ever closer. with another night by the boys with the ever-so-slightly-naughty name. Aims to recreate a lurid Saturday Night Fever atmosphere. but with a soundtrack of funk and urban jazz rather than dodgy disco. So dig out those platform soles. the lurex. the hipsters. the body glitter and get funky! ()r iz ya sleeping?
