THE POPE MUST DIE

The Pope Must Die (15) (Peter Richardson, UK, 1991) Robbie Coltrane, Alex Rocco, Herbert Lom, Paul Bartel. 97 mins. Mason Boyne, where are you now? From celebrated TV comic Orangeman, it is but a short step lorthe rotund talent of Dar Robbie to strut his infallible stuff as Pope Dave I in this latest broad farce from those persistent Comic Strip folks. It you rememberthe big man’s cardinal in Jarman's Caravaggio and his blessed sister in disguise lrom Nuns On The Run, you’re probably wondering just what it is about the ever-amiable Scot that induces filmmakers to smother l

. him in ecclesiastical garb.

After this sorry exercise in strained l

bad taste, perhaps Robbie himself

should think twice before he dons a cassock again. Writer Pete Richens and co-writer/director Peter Richardson here put the theme of fiscal corruption at the highest spiritual level to the service of one-joke comedy. As Collrane’s rock ’n’ roll country priest cum car mechanic Friar Dave Albinizzi is mistakenly elected supreme Pontilt

and comes to realise the extent of the conspiracy between sinning cardinals Rocco and Bartel and Lom’s twitchy megalomaniac magnate, there‘s only so much gutiaw mileage to be made from the sight of Catholic chaps in long dresses being very naughty indeed.

As it realising the very problem of sustaining the humorous momentum, the script then goes into overdrive, linking subplots about Lom's loxy daughter, Collrane’s murky past and a certain heavy metal star. Meanwhile in

the main plot, plans are aloot to assassinate Pope Dave, belore he

1 discovers how much the Vatican Bank ; likes to say ‘yes’ to the less scrupulous

kind of cleric. Trouble is, with so much exposition to get through, the laughs just dry up, and a fairly leeble llnal confrontation does little to help matters.

While Messrs Rocco, Bartel and Lom

are always fun to watch, poor Robbie doesn't have much to do except be lovable, and although there’s undoubtedly an audience in Scotland for The Pope Must Die, on the strength of its title and Collrane's participation, it doesn't really offer much beyond the hit-and-miss shenanigans you’d expect. Forsome, this might be enough, but the kind of lare you'd come

home with from the video shop doesn’t

always stand up in the more

demanding arena olyourlocal cinema. E (TrevorJohnston)
