TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES ll:

THE SEC

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret DiThe Doze. (PG) (Michael Pressman, US 1991) Paige Turco, David Warner, Ernie Reyes Jr. 87 mins. Do you get the impression the guys in the original shell-suits are on their way out? A tickle public is ignoring store shelves packed with Michelangelo personal hygiene sprays and Donatello edible underwear, and looking around for the next lad. In a few short years Raphael will be found in seedy bars, accosting strangers and telling them ‘I used to be a Turtle, buy me a drink buddy,’ and the rest of the guys will be flogging their reunion tour round the northern club chicken-in-a-basket circuit. That‘s the grim future the loveable adolescent amphibians lace, and with only four hacks showing up for . the press preview of this movie. the . writing is already on the sewer wall. Not that it's a bad lilm. There’s less plot and less violence than the original, but apart from that, all the elements at the winning formula are present and correct. Splinterthe philosophical rat utters his usual stock platitudes, Shredder the baddie is back from the dead, and the stock oi pizza relerences I has been thoroughly replenished. The

BET OF THE 002E

. plot, such as it is, concerns a revenge plan by Shredder, who decides to grow a couple oi mutants of his own to give the avocado-hued smartasses a good kicking.

His cunning plan is easily toiled of course, thanks to the help of wacky Prolessor Perry, played by founder member of the RSC David Warner, who delights in saying things like ‘Yo Dudes' in his best Stratlord tones. In fact the only thing that can stop the guys seems to be Vanilla Ice who throws a major spanner into the works with a dire rendition of ‘The Ninja Rap‘.

All in all, it’s a semi-decent sequel that won’t disappoint the remaining iaithlul. Sadly, though, the abiding memory to take from the film is at Proi Perry mixing up his potions in, of all things, 3 Bart Simpson tumbler. The Turtles look suitably chastened as they stare into their nemesis. Cowabunga? Eat my shorts. (Tom Lappin)
