Bride ot Frankenstein (James Whale. US. 1935) 11.15pm. When it is discovered that the monster survived the fire in the windmill. the eerie Dr Pretorious forces Frankenstein into making a female companion. A more rounded film than its predecessor. it also contains some wonderful moments of wit. pathos and sheer terror.

Young Filmmaker ol the Year Programme 5 2.30pm. The wonderfully titled Legend of the Shagbeasr is one of two films from Napier College in Edinburgh. and the programme also includes three others from New York University.
Love Film (lstvan Svabo. Hungary. 1970) 4pm. Svabo‘s first colour film remains one of his least known works outside his native country. Two childhood sweethearts. separated by the events of 1956, seek reunion in a small town in France.

Hamlet (Grigori Kozintsev. USSR. 1964) 6.15pm. Based on Pasternak's translation of Shakespeare. the character of Hamlet is more threatening than in traditional Western interpretations. The prison-like Elsinore is perfectly complimented by Shostakovich's impressive score.
‘I’rust (Hal Hartley. US. l99())6.45pm. Hartley‘s follow-up to The Unbelievable Trth is a darkly comic view ofmiddle America. Maria causes family uproar when she gets pregnant by her quarterback boyfriend. and the film follows her struggle to achieve social normality.

The Road to Morocco (David Butler. US. 1942) 7.15pm. The third and possibly best of the Crosby/Hope series with the usual melangc of gags. song and absurd humour. this time in an Arabian Nights setting.

The Mountain (Markus lmhoof. Switzerland. 1990) 8.30pm. This gripping. claustrophobic thriller centres around a weather station on top of a high mountain. which is isolated during the long winters. Instead of the usual lone observer. a newly married couple take the post. but they are joined by a resentful cx-soldier.

Dream On (Amber Collective. UK. 1991) 8.45pm. The Amber Collective is dedicated to providing a record of everyday life in the North East. Their latest offering is set around three weekly matches at a Ladies Darts Club — a meeting ground for three women who are escaping from less than fulfillinglives.
Volere Volare (Maurizio Nichetti/Guido Manuli. Italy. 1991 ) 9pm. Nichettiscored a low-key hit with The Icicle Thief. and follows it up here with an even more extravagant fantasy based on the sexual desires of a man who dubs sound effectson cartoons. One day. in true Roger Rabbit style. he turns into a cartoon himself.

Sorry I'm Late (Massimo Troisi. Italy. 1983) 9. 15pm. A Neapolitan good-for-nothing falls in love with a girl he meets at a party. but she lives outsidethe city. He can win her over only by becoming more responsible and caring.
The Loser (Erik Burke. Us. 1991)
11.15pm. After losing his girlfriend. hip New Yorker Ilank wins $200 million in the city lottery. Maybe now he has the means to get her back . . . Burke'slow-budget black comedy is an interesting example of young US ‘guerilla‘ filmmaking.
