TERMINATOR 2: JUDGMENT DAY

I "N‘s

Terminator 2: Judgment Day (15) (James Cameron, US, 1991) Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton, Edward Furlong, Robert Patrick. 136 mins. The most expensive film ever made. Arnie paid partly by private jet. A gazillion dollar US opening weekend. We’ve all heard or read so much about T2 by now that the hype, the ‘event' mentality, threatens to submerge the fact that it’s lirst and foremost a sequel, a follow-up to the compactly-budgeted and razorsharp sci-ti actionerthat helped confirm

3 , Arnie's potential screen icon status as

tar back as 1984. The Terminator laid out both the narrative ideas and the

' highly-influential so-called ‘tech noir’

style: here Cameron is using the experience gained in the meantime with Aliens and The Abyss to elaborate on the original at expensive, exuberant

' and undeniably impressive length.

In the earlier adventure Arnie’s cyborg tailed in its time-travelling mission to return from the 21 st century and eliminate Sarah Connor (Linda

Hamilton) before she could give birth to . the son who would one day lead the

, human race in theirlightback against

5 the all-controlling machines. In this

second instalment Herr Schwarzenegger has been reprogrammed by the older John

Connor to return and protect his mother a

and his younger sell (Edward Furlong) against a second, more advanced cyborg (Robert Patrick) since sent on the same death-dealing errand to wipe the pair of them out and so alterthe

course of history. Arnie the pitiless bad guy, is now Arnie the underdog good guy lighting on our behall. All of which says a lot about what's happened to his image overthe past seven years.

Here it’s not only a set of groovy catchphrases that Arnie picks up from his young charge, but the cyborg's gradually learned awareness at the value of human life and the meaning of pain sets the tone for the warning images of nuclear apocalypse that pepper the action throughout. As trucks, helicopters, motorbikes, heavy weaponry and a brilliantly-conceived Fx device creating a worthy Arnie opponent, weigh in at lightning pace to deliver a mayhem factor that's virtually oh the scale, it's this element of uncontrived human compassion lurking behind the wisecracks and explosive setpieces that makes Terminator 2 more than just a $100 million dollar tairground ride.

With a great Arnie performance that makes you truly believe he’s an android, what more could you ask tor? Even if it was just mindless entertainment it would be great fun: the fact that it’s just a little bit more than that is cause lor genuine plaudits all round. (TrevorJohnston)
