While the soccer clubs are collecting £5 million transler lees and red cards galore in a tit oi summer madness, a humblerwinter sport will be starting its season in a less brash style, and hopelully a less combatative one, with a prestigious three-way international tournament.

Hockey always used to be regarded, in a sexist and patronising way, as the province oi ruddy adolescent girls with corned-beet legs. Since the success oi the Great Britain Olympic men’s side, however, it has captured a wider degree oi public and media attention. Sean Kerly even enjoyed a briel spell oi public adulation as a sort oi Gary Llneker with a curved stick.

Kerly won’t be among the British squad arriving in Glasgow tor the Pakistan International Hockey weekend, but the squad does include

iamiliar names like Sean Rowlands, Russell Garcia and Steven Batchelor. Essentially, It’s the England squad, with Welshman David Hacker the only man drawn from the other three countries. The British are obviously taking the game against Pakistan seriously as they have brought their team psychologist Brian Miller along with them (‘Let's look at the deeper signiiicance oi the short corner here guys...)

The Pakistan side, led by captain Shahbaz Ahmed, have a line tradition in the sport and will prove worthy opposition, taking on a Scottish side on the Saturday, and Great Britain on Sunday. (Tom Lappin)
