TRIPLE BILL
Seen at King's Theatre, Glasgow. Giselle only at King's Glasgow until 31 Aug, and the Playhouse, Edinburgh 24—28 Sept.
It's a real shame that Scottish Ballet’s new Triple Bill will not be seen in the capital, but then if Giselle is as beautifully danced as Concerto Barocco it’ll be worth seeing.
Concerto Barocco, by George Balanchine, is a gorgeous ballet—such clarity of line and simplicity of staging. The ballerinas are delicate in their pale tunics, and perfectly rehearsed in the often very tricky counterpoint.
Vespri, choreographed by Andre Prokovsky, is a show-piece, bringing
the male dancers to the fore. Star of the show is unboubtedly Vincent Hantam
2 with marvellous elevation, quicksilver
footwork and a winning stage
presence. The choreography inevitably
pales next to Balanchine, even though
9 the sumptuous, gilded costumes add 3 some of the missing magic.
Troy Game is given its Scottish Ballet
premiere with much liveliness and fun. 3
It's an ideal way of introducing a contemporary dance element into the
and gaining the attention of young ballet-going supporters. A bunch of men in multi-coloured bikinis and

5 hard to impress, but it’s the camp play , that causes such audience hilarity in
‘ the end.
In all three dances, the young
' performers demonstrate an infectious enthusiasm and almost spot-on
technique. But there is an absence of weightiness. The dancers are trained in the classical tradition with its emphasis on lightness left overfrom the romantic ballet—the ethereal quality that sets them apart from other mortals. The contemporary style, on the other hand, requires a totally differenttraining. However, itwill come with maturity and, in Troy Game, provides a more authentic African feeling reflecting its roots.
This is a vastly improved Scottish Ballet— a pleasure to watch. It is hoped that in the future they will be able to mount work that is more thought-provoking with equally exciting results. (Tamsin Grainger)
