FRIDAY 13 Glasgow

I Dire Straits SEC‘C. Finnieston Quay. 248 3000. SOLD OUT. Is there some unwritten law stipulating that in order to shift cartloads of (‘Ds you have to distil the most boring elements of rock history. the worst guitar effects. and vocals with as much verve as a free-wheeling combine harvester? Just who buys Dire Straits records'.’ Who helps sell out their concerts‘.’ Why don't they crawl out ofthe woodwork and own up'.’ At least Runrig fans admit where their preferences lie.

I Carnival Art King Tut‘s Wah Wah Hut.St Vincent Street. 221 5279. 9pm. £4. it seems that funk metal acts front the American West ('oast are two-a-penny these days. but Los Angeles' Carnival Art appear to be happy melting down the same influences as Living (‘olour eta/and

spewing them out again in the shape of their debut album 'I‘hrumdronc. And they have the audacity to call it 'original‘! Probably worth seeing for their brassneck value.

I The Thieves and Go! Crash. Cotton Club. Scott Street. 3320712. 10pm. £3 (£2 with any club flyer). Glasgow stalwarts some years back now. who have been

forced to work from the bottom again. The '

Thieves were once the butt ofeveryone's complaints about the stagnant ‘Glasgow sound'. an all-too-easy target. A few years on. and guess what'.’ Nothing's changed! We're still slagging them mercilessly.

I Southside Traders. (ilassford Street. 552 6246. 10pm. Free.

I Roolsie Tootsie Blues Band Blackfriars. Bell Street. 552 5924. 9.30pm. Free. Blues hence the name.

I The Honeychurch (‘hisholms Shuttle Street. Paisley. 889 6867. 9pm. £1 .50. The lloneychurch have obviously been fed on a staple diet of the worst of Scottish pop from the 80s. The distressing thing isthat they could go places. A track on the Honey .»1!'I‘/tc(‘urc compilation is a step in the right direction.

I No Frontiers Legend's. Thorn Brae. Johnstone. 0505 35818. 9pm. Free.

I Banana Republic Christie's. Main Street. Alexandria. 0389 57799. 9.30pm. Free.

I Electric Daisies King 'I‘ui‘s Wait Wait Hut. St Vincent Street. 221 5279. 9pm. £3. Rapidly eating our words on funk metal a few paragraphs back. it must be said that when confronted with the infectious power (yes. it is possible to be infectious and powerful) ofthe I’ileetric Daisies it becomes easy to distinguish them from the morass of bands chancing their arm doing a similar thing. Hard to believe they‘ve only been around a year. but this istheir first birthday celebration. Bring a party popper.

I Lowlife Traders. (ilassford Street. 552 6246. 10pm. Free. With the much-delayed release of their Sun A nrurrum album. l.owlife go all diverse on us. Sure. there's Craig1.orentson's eyer-vclvetine vocals and Will lleggic‘s deep rumbling bass sound to end all deep rumbling bass sounds underpinning the whole thing. but the band demonstrate that there's a place for a good rock-out amongst all the ethereal meandering.

I The Fiances Blackfriars. Bell Street. 552 5924. 9.30pm. Free.

I The Straight Men Richard's Basement. West Regent Street. 221 01 16. 9pm. Free. I Eddie Baskerville and The Fayre Chisholm's. Shuttle Street. Paisley. 889 6867. 9pm. £1.50. Who knows what guise the chameleon-like l‘iddie will churn out tonight. but it certainly won‘t involve taking him seriously.

I One World Christie‘s. Main Street. Alexandria. 0389 57799. 9.30pm. Free. Typical Glasgow pop. but stretches the imagination slightly further than othersof their ilk.

Edinburgh

I The Joyriders and The Pact Basin Street. llaymarket Terrace. 337 1006. Rock with melodies (as opposed to the ‘melodic rock' above) with the fiery energy ofhardcore. featuring remnants of the lamented Cateran. When The Joyriders really get to grinding and belting away at those guitars. the effect can be pretty uplifting.

I Bluetinger Platform ()ne.Rut1and Street. 225 2433. 9pm. Free. Having notched up more gigs than Manic Street Preachers have stitches. Bluefinger have now made available a tape with songs from their set: some originals. but mostly ballads and rockers from the 50s and 60s. including a word—perfect ‘La Bamba'.

I The Shadowiand Negoeiants. l.othian Street. 225 6313. 10.30pm. Free. Withthe Kaleidoscope LP warmly received. The Shadowland. of impeccable mod pedigree. are now preparing a video and a rarities cassette of their oils-influenced. Hammond-augmented sound.
