GLASGOW Fridays

I The Art! at the Tunnel. llpm-3.30am. £4. New DJs with attitude Duncan Reid (ex ofJoy). Oscar (of Rain). Mel (ofthe Tunnel) and the infamous Steven Sleepman on PR eventually take over after several delays watch for explosions. Rap. ltalo house. techno and upfront dance music in well-trendy atmosphere. Meanwhile in the smaller room a more laid-back (but not soul) atmosphere prevails.

I Crash at the Cotton Club. 11pm—3.30am. £3 (£2 with matric card). Now officially completely unpretentious. long-running and well respected indie crossover/dance/groove night with a loyal crowd. Don‘t forget there‘s a pound off the entry price if you bring back one of their old flyers to be recycled.

I Devotion at the Art School. 9.30pm—2am. £1.50(£1 students). ‘Student music‘. soul and house. apparently. so there you go. And drinks promos.

I Earth at Rain. 375 Sauchiehall Street. 11pm—3am. £3.50 (£2 with matric card). Rare groo've. soul and bass dance night building up quite a following. with DJs Nick Peacock and Harri. Watch out for drinks promos.

I loan at the Sub Club. 11pm—3.30am. £4. The Slam boys manage to fit in Icon between all their other commitments. playing the latest house and dance to the trendy with big-name guests. still holding its own in the depressed club scene though numbers are down.

I The Network 10.30pm—2.30am. £3 (£2 before 11.30pm). Radio Clyde‘s grooviest DJ well. let‘s face it. their onlygroovy DJ apart from Cap‘n George Paul Welsh. playing a mix ofdance tunes.

I Radio City at the Mayfair (Cameo Suite). 10pm—2.30am. £2. Now more or less entirely 90$ rave and indie dance.with the odd 60s rock toe tapper too.

I Rumble at Joe Paparazzi. 11pm—3.30am. £3.50 (£1 .50 student). Sadly looking a little lost now in the cavernous expanses of Joe Papps. but still an excellent night for just the right balance between indie dance. rap and techno. Not too hot. not too pricey. plenty of seats and brilliant music go on. fill it up!

I Shag at Fury Murry‘s. 11pm—late. £3. Enjoyable mish-mash of indie-dance. pop. classic chart hits and silly singalongs.

I Smile at Hollywood Studio 3. 11pm—3.30am. £2.50. Late 60$. mid 80s and modern indie is the recipe including 808 State. 1000 Homo DJs. DAF. MCS. REM. AAAK, YMCT. KLF. New FADS. Clock DVA. Psychic TV. BAD. BDP. KMFDM. and possibly even EMF. I Temptation at Strathclyde University. 9pm—Zam. Now free till further notice. Students and guests only. Tam Coyle‘s indie-dance bonanza.

I Time Warp Rock Club at The Venue. 10pm—3am. £2.50 (£6 for weekend ticket). They‘re amenable to requests. but basically it‘s a mixture of rock. tnetal.

I Detect at Fury Murry‘s. 11pm—1ate. £3.50. Dance music and 80s pop forthe medium-hip student types.

I Dream Sequence at Rooftops (Secrets lounge). 10.30pm—2.30am. £2. A good selection of indie dance faves in congenial atmosphere with your host ‘Smiling‘ Tam Coyle.

I Fitth Dimension at Glasgow Poly. 10pm—3am. Students and guests only. Traditional indie and goth night.

I Helter Skelter at the Mayfair. 10pm—2.30am. £2. Sixties rock. mod sounds. psychedelic trips: that‘sthat Helter Skelter feeling.

I The Network 10.30pm—2.30am. £3. Upfront dance in Paisley. fronted by The Orb with help from The Shamen‘s DJ.

Replacing Romp and aimed at the Art School crowd. this new night plays rare groove. acid jazz and jazzy dance everything from A Tribe Called Quest to old Rod Stewart numbers in a laid-back. print-decorated area. in an attempt. they say. to escape both the pretentious and the commercial.
