I Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine and The Senseless Things Barrowland. Gallowgate, 552 4601. 7.30pm. £7 plus booking fee. Tickets from Just The Ticket, Virgin. Union Street. 226 4679. Nothing. it seems, can halt the march ofthe unstoppable Carter towards untold fame and riches. Well. I’ll be frank - [can‘t fathom the appeal of two charisma deficients dressing up worthwhile issues in clever-clever punning lyrics and gutless electro backing, but thousands would howl me down if 1 dared utter the profound maxim that Carter Are Crap. To these cars support band The Senseless Things have a much firmer grasp on the wacky pop ethic with their cartoon-like presence, irresistible clashing melodies and kitsch titles.

I Vibe Tribe and Better Ways King Tut‘s Wah Wah Hut. St Vincent Street. 221 5279. 9pm. £3.50. See Fri 1 for Vibe Tribe and preview for Better Ways.

I Babel Richard‘s Basement. West Regent Street. 221 (ll 16. 9pm. Free. See Fri 25.

I Top and The Cranberries Bay Hotel. Pierhead. Gourock. 0475 31244. Mark Goodier favourites (and don‘t his listeners suffer for it?) who appear to have a monopoly on. if not mediocrity. then at least half-measures they're passable live and bearable on record. but despite their intrinsic lack of pretension they owe a lot of their acceptance to fashion. More fun than tidying your handkerchiefdrawer. The Cranberries are Cork‘s answer to the Thames Valley atmosphere chiseller. but a pretty standard reply at that. despite mountains of favourable press so far.

I Billy Rivers Magoo's. Croft Street. Kilmarnock. 0563 38940. 11pm. £2. Blues maestro.

Edinburgh

I Elkie Brooks Playhouse Theatre. Greenside Place. 557 2590. 7.30pm.

£1 1 .50. £10.50. £9.50. Sandpaper- larynxed chanteuse with a good line in hair-tossing emotive theatrics perfected through her years in the music biz. She even managed to survive the ignominy of being in a band called Vinegar Joe.

I The Levellers and The Sandkings King Tut‘s Wah Wah Hut. St Vincent Street. 221 5279. 9pm. £5.50. See preview forThe Levellers. This‘ll be a curious experience for The Sandkings. relegated to a support slot when they‘ve appeared on many occasions at Tut's as the headline band. Not the most inspired crowd of cheesy fragglers but the dispensability oftheir records is alleviated live by their supremely infectious performance.

Another gig at the Pres by Dr Feelgood followed by a further appearance on Wed 6! Why don‘t they just announce a residency and be done with it? The band that many thought were goingto eat the world. and had they not been upstaged by punk. it might well have happened. Top-flight British R&B. (By the way. I do miss Wilko. Sorry.) Greenside Place. 557 2590. 7.30pm. £14.

£12. Australia‘s greatest cultural export since Skippy (and about as taxing on the grey matter as her cuddly predecessor) is suddenly basking in the glow ofa newly-won credibility. How? Why? And does this mean that the audience of tonight’s show will now be composed largely of aspiring Late Show presenters? I Sam Harlet Negociants. Lothian Street. 225 6313. 9.30pm. Free. One of Edinburgh’s most diverse and adaptable bands. Worth seeing.

I The Hyenas Preservation Hall. Victoria Street. 226 3816. 9.30pm. Free.

TUESDAY 5 Glasgow

I James and Thousand Yard Stare Barrowland. Gallowgate. 552 4601. 7.30pm. £8 plus booking fee. Tickets from Just The Ticket. Virgin. Union Street. 226 4679. See preview for James. Thousand Yard Stare have been lambasted in recent times for their celebration ofultraordinary indie pop. but live it‘s hard not to be consumed by their charming. self-effacing patter and insidious wee tunes. And bear in mind that they have had to bearthe

albatross of a formative existence in Slough enough to induce the thousand yard stare in the liveliest ofsouls.

I The Tragically flip and The Real McCoy King Tut‘s Wah Wah Hut. St Vincent Street. 221 5279. 9pm. £4. Canada's Tragically Hip return to King Tut‘sto promote their single ‘Little Bones‘ and deal out more of their rock'n‘roll REM play the blues. apparently. The Real McCoy have always seemed reminiscent of Del Amitri with their hybrid of mid-Atlantic rock and folk-like melodic work. but very competent at that.

I Get Ballou Traders. Glassford Street. 552 6246. 10pm. Free.

Edinburgh

I Discharge Venue. Calton Road. 557 3073. Hardline punk stalwarts who became thrash messiahs. Many of the big American thrash bands pay homage to their influence. although they were largely ignored here at the time. Now enjoyinga second lease of life. needless to say.

THURSDAY 7 Glasgow

I Tin Machine Barrowland. Gallowgate. 552 4601 . 7.30pm. £9 plus booking fee. Tickets from Just The Ticket. Virgin, Union Street. 226 4679. Bowie and crew plug the second of their LPs (how many of you thought they wouldn't even make it this far?). Despite cool response so far. their combined talent is quite extraordinary. and after much touring. they seem to be settling in to the ‘band’ vibe. Doubtless worth seeing. ifonly by virtue of being one of the oddest loud rock bands around.
