Wet Wet Wet return to live work with asmall(ish) test-the-water gig. just to check ifthey’ve successfully exorcised the ghost of‘Sweet Little Mystery" and lost all their teen fans who put them on top to begin with. This maturity business will all end in tears.

The brilliance ofthe Difford/Tilbrook songwriting partnership has been stressed so often that it‘s becoming a cliche. but you can‘t spawn one without it being steeped in the truth. Their recent stuff however has been a gross bland-out of a disappointment.

Free-form jazz and Bulgarian folk music are about the only areas their current aptly-titled Life'n'Perspecrives OfA Genuine Crossover album doesn‘t touch. Heavy guitars. funk rhythms and live mixing are the more salient features of their live set.

Minus McGowan (whom. they say. they hope will continue to write for them). but plus Joe Strummer, this will be a very different Pogues from the combo that put out the first album those many years ago. If anything. the frenzy factor should be higher. with batty old Strummer sweating away at the front. The Pogues have even taken to doing old Clash songs too. and calling on support group Storm (rocking Celtic duo) to join them for encores.

Although the poor reception of their Loco Live album doesn‘t further the cause oftheir 1-2-3-4 blitzkrieg philosophy. The Ramones‘ performance last time they played Scotland proved them to be masters ofthe awkward adolescent anthem. equally at home with highly melodic numbers or their more familiar goofy jet-propelled chants.
I The Saw Doctors Mayfair. Sauchiehall Street. Ireland‘s answer to Bryan Adams— well. they topped the Irish charts for several centuries with ‘1 Useta Lover‘- but Britain has so far been emphatically impervious to their charms.

Flying teapots. electric cheese — weird concepts. to be sure. but nothing remarkable about them in the Gong universe. After a lengthy absence. Daevid Allen is becoming one of the least escapable presences on the live circuit. Never mind all these eighteen-year-old pseudo-hippies — if you want hippy. straight from the core. this is the place to be.
