ROCK & BLUES MUSIC

Rutles this ain‘t, and how they manage to do ‘A Day In The Life’ without additional musicians is beyond us.

I Transglobal Underground Tunnel, Mitchell Street. 204 1000. 11pm. £5. See Clubs preview.

I Fastback Rooftops. Sauchiehall Street. 3325883. 10.30pm. £4.

Edinburgh

I Lenny limit: Playhouse Theatre. Greenside Place. 557 2590. 7.30pm. £11.50. Ah. auld Len‘s taken enough time offligging to put together a tour. tacking together chunky tunes. free spirits and some shocking dress sense. But chunks of

his first album were rather good. so we can

still keep our hopes up for this. I Tigertailz and Blublud Venue , Calton Road. 557 3073. Welsh glam-rockers who

delight in taking it to cartoonish extremes. 5

I Sick Kids benelit Lord Darnley. West Port. 229 4341. Blues. R&B and rock with Bluefinger. Texas Breakfast. Shorty

Rogers. Rab Howitt. Wolverines. Charlie i

and Her Sheepdogs and Alden Bald. I Live music Negociants. Lothian Street. 225 6313. 9.30pm. Free.

Livingston

I flunrig Forum. Almondvale . 0506 419191. Hail. the conquering heroes. Those who can‘t hold out until the Barrowland show might want to trek out here for another euphoria session.

MONDAY 2 Glasgow

I Wet Wet Wet Henry Wood Hall. Claremont Street. 221 4952. SOLD OUT. With their album delayed to incorporate a free record of cover versions. Wet Wet Wet return to live work with asmall(ish) test-the-water gig. just to check ifthey’ve successfully exorcised the ghost of‘Sweet Little Mystery" and lost all their teen fans who put them on top to begin with. This maturity business will all end in tears.

I Squeeze Barrowland. Gallowgate. 552 4601 . 7.30pm. £9 plus booking fee. Tickets from Just The Ticket. Virgin. Union Street. 226 4679. The brilliance ofthe Difford/Tilbrook songwriting partnership has been stressed so often that it‘s becoming a cliche. but you can‘t spawn one without it being steeped in the truth. Their recent stuff however has been a gross bland-out of a disappointment.

I Nanci Griffith Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. Sauchiehail Street. 6.30pm. SOLD OUT. See preview.

I Tigertailz and Blublud Cathouse. Hollywood Studios. Brown Street. 248 6606. 9pm. £5 (advance). £5.50 (on door). See Sun 1.

I Urban Dance Squad (TBC) King Tut‘s Wah Wah Hut, St Vincent Street.221

5279. 9pm. Dutch crew striving to take the -

cross-fertilisation of musical genres furtherthan the rest. Free-form jazz and Bulgarian folk music are about the only areas their current aptly-titled Life'n'Perspecrives OfA Genuine Crossover album doesn‘t touch. Heavy guitars. funk rhythms and live mixing are the more salient features of their live set.

Edinburgh

I The Pogues and Storm Playhouse Theatre. Greenside Place. 557 2590. 7.30pm. £12. £10. Minus McGowan (whom. they say. they hope will continue to write for them). but plus Joe Strummer, this will be a very different Pogues from the combo that put out the first album those many years ago. If anything. the frenzy factor should be higher. with batty old Strummer sweating away at the front. The Pogues have even taken to doing old Clash songs too. and calling on support group Storm (rocking Celtic duo) to join them for encores.

I The Bootleg Beatles Queen‘s Hall. South Clerk Street. 668 2019. 7pm. £7.50.£6.50. £5. See Sun 1.

WEDNESDAY 4 Glasgow

I The Ramones Barrowland. Gallowgate. 552 4601. 7.30pm. £8 plus booking fee. Tickets from Just The Ticket. Virgin. Union Street. 226 4679. Although the poor reception of their Loco Live album doesn‘t further the cause oftheir 1-2-3-4 blitzkrieg philosophy. The Ramones‘ performance last time they played Scotland proved them to be masters ofthe awkward adolescent anthem. equally at home with highly melodic numbers or their more familiar goofy jet-propelled chants.

I The Saw Doctors Mayfair. Sauchiehall Street. Ireland‘s answer to Bryan Adams— well. they topped the Irish charts for several centuries with ‘1 Useta Lover‘- but Britain has so far been emphatically impervious to their charms.

I Stolen Ways Glasgow University Union. University Avenue. 339 8697. 9pm. Free. Students and guests.

I The Countrymen Gallery. Nelson Street. 429 2721. Free.

I Colour Sue Fixx 11. Miller Street , 221 1568. 9pm. Free.

Edinburgh

I Bonnie Raitt Playhouse Theatre. Greenside Place. 557 2590. 7.30pm.£11. £10. Returning only four months after her last Scottish date. the flame-haired. Grammy-winning singer and slide guitarist continues to prove that she was just a late developer all along.

I Daevid Allen's Gong Maison Queen‘s Hall. South Clerk Street. 668 2019. 7.30pm. £6 plus booking fee. Flying teapots. electric cheese weird concepts. to be sure. but nothing remarkable about them in the Gong universe. After a lengthy absence. Daevid Allen is becoming one of the least escapable presences on the live circuit. Never mind all these eighteen-year-old pseudo-hippies if you want hippy. straight from the core. this is the place to be.

I Sick Kids benelit Venue. Calton Road. 557 3073. A blues- and R&B-based benefit, with the talents of The Rootsie Tootsie Blues Band. Texas Breakfast and Blue Hyena.
