What a response. Every morning we’ve been wading through giant piles of Readers’ Poll reply forms that :

i l

you’ve sent in. So we threw them all into a giant skip and burnt them. Only kidding folks, we slaved through

many a long night to collate the results, and here they are, the List readers’ picks of 1991. '

FILM

Best

1) The Commitments

2:) Thelma & Louise

2:) Silence of the Lambs

Thelma & Louise looked a winner all the way in the early stages. but the Commitments vote came from nowhere to overhaul it and take the List Oscar.

Worst

1) Highlander ll

2) Sleeping with The Enemy

3) Robin Hood

Sean (‘onnery's flabby sequel had the worst film award sewn up early on with a close race for the runners-up places. Most of you failed to specify which Robin Hood film you abhorred. so we lumped them together and came up with a general antipathy for Lincoln Green.

THEATRE

Best

1) The Cone Gatherers Communieado

2) Bondagers Traverse

3) Archaos Circus Company Autumn List cover stars Communicado‘s Tramway show was a worthy winner here with a host of productions vying for the places. The high number of Scottish companies mentioned in despatches shows that theatre north of the border has a growing following.

Worst

1) The View American Connexion 2=) Hedda Gabler Citizens‘

2:) The Comedians Royal

Lyceum

A very wide spread of candidates for the year's prime turkey. with American Connexion's multi-media experiment proving unpopular despite a rave review from Joyce McMillan in The Guardian.

SOAP

Best soap

1) Coronation Street

2) Brookside

3) Eastenders

The top two battled it out neck and neck all the way until class finally told. and the Street pulled clear in the run-in. The Walford Square regulars were a distance behind in third.

OOMIOS

Best

1) Mike McShane

2) Tony Slattery

3:) Dawn French/Rab C. Nesbitt/ Denis Leary/Vic Reeves/Jack Dee. Tubbiness seemed a vital factor in determining your favourite comics. In the end weight told for American funnyman McShane who pipped his svelter British partner Slattery for the coveted top spot. The rest finished in a heap as they say.

Worst

1) Vic Reeves

2) John Major

3) Jim Davidson

‘Oh no. Bob. they think I’m less funny than something you can poke a stick at.‘ A serious case of over-exposure for dizzy Mr Reeves. finishing a mile clear of two unfunny Tories.

GIG

l) Runrig

2:) Paul Simon

2:) Billy Bragg

A one-band race this. The stirring (‘aledonian anthems of Runrig trounced all opposition. with two radically different folk popsters the nearest challengers.

ALBUM

1) REM Out Of Time

2) U2 Achtung Baby

3) Kevin McDermott Orchestra Bedazzled

The two street-cred blockbusters dominated the poll with Georgia's finest four-piece having the advantage of releasing their album early in the year and having three hit singles. The borne-grown KMO put in a worthy showing in third.

MAN

1) Terry Waite 2) John McCarthy 3) Boris Yeltsin

Plenty of votes for the hostages. with a late flurry of support for the late I lamented Freddie Mercury. Boris l Yeltsin had healthy support although he didn‘t get a certain Mr I (iorbachev’s vote. l

WOMAN or rm; YEAR

l) Jill Morrell

2) Liz MeColgan

3) Mary Robinson

A ding-dong struggle between the woman who campaigned tirelessly for John McCarthy‘s release. and the l().(l()(l metres world champion. Jill Morrell held on. but Mc(‘olgan has the consolation of being BBC Sports Personality of the year.

RADIO

Best

I) Nicky Campbell 1 2) Simon Mayo 3) John Peel A singular triumph for newly-elected 1 St Andrews University rector Campbell. star of our autumn Student Supplement. He beat offthe} comic Breakfast Show man. with old faithful Peclie lagging behind. A Radio One clean sweep. Worst 1) Simon Bates

2) (iary Davies

3:) l)l.T/Steve Wright

A difficult one to read. this. Batesie powered to a commanding lead only to be overhauled at the midway stage by a sudden rush of ‘Ooh Gary Davies“ votes. Bates rallied like the true audio-emetic you voted him. to regain and hold the lead comfortably. J
