V SINGLES

I Mega City 4: Stop(Dlg Lite) Can you picture Glenn Tilbrook fronting Husker Du and even tossinga nod in the direction of glam while he‘s at it? You haven‘t heard Mega City 4. And that’s just the B-side. ‘Stop‘ itself is the more obviously commercial (ie obvious) track. but this will have the chs and The Wonder Stuff contemplating their Iaurcls in a worried fashion. Chart bound. (AM)

I Revenge: Gun World Porn (Factory) All the intelligence and sensitivity ofThe Cult launchinga boozed-up raid on New Order‘s studio. Which. in a sense. is what has happened here. Abysmal. especially in the words department. (AM)

I Rhythm Hlll: Start AsYou Mean To Go On (Daisy Music) To promote themselves in a style that‘s falling from favour— Scottish white soul— Glasgow's Rhythm Hill will have to do better than they have here. A budding songwriting talent. but it needs nurtured. and needs to break away from songs (‘I Never Learned To Hide What‘s Good‘) that would peg them as baby Wets. (AM)

I The Satellite DI Undying Love: Endlesst (Virgin)

I Tribe: Joyride (Slash/London) Blisltill's latest musical export chiycr their third offering and. thankfully . it oyycs nothing to Roxcttc's song ot the same name. Instead. it is one ofthosc rare things a single that makes you eager to hear the album. Mainstream rock. but u ith enough flair and idiosyncracies to lift it well above its peers without sounding like any other indie rock band. (III)

I Catwalk: Damascus (Dedicated) As befits its progenitor (former

.Ilt’lmly' Maker type Chris Roberts. the consummate proscur). ‘Damascus‘ is pre-formed artifice interpreting would-be art. Resonant echoes of that other perennial muser ('hris. Mr Thompson of The Bathcrs. abound. As does Ferry ~esque enigmatic Ioafing about. a femrnc latale's lipstick traces. and a lovely. epic. slashing B-side. Largely arty. occasionally farty. ((‘MeLl

I Sweet Jesus: Phonelreali Honey (Rough Trade) Following uptheir appearance in (‘ieoff Travis's singles club. Sweet Jesus are the first act on the reactivated Rouin Trade. Ray Shulman takes the production credits. and the consequent construct guitars incessant. vocals alto is appropriately Sugarcubcs in its bitterness. Sundays in its sweetness. ((‘McI.)

I Manic Street Preachers: You Love Us(Co|umbia) The critical stock and salacious little-tattle continues to ebb and flow, and their forthcoming life story gets titled 'Apocryphal Now‘. As the soundtrack. ‘You Love Is is cocky and kinda hopeful. Consider the crash and burn AC DC otitro and ponder: they may be hopelessly calculating image- mongcrs. but. boy. does the l Iingc & Bracket staidncssof pop need theirs and their Daisy Chainsaw ilk's cichsof sex and fun. (CMCL)

I Apache Indian: Don Raia (Sure Delight) At 24. Apache Indian has made history. not only by having lyyo consecutive Number One hits in the reggae charts. but by beingthc

llrst Asian to do so. ‘I)on Raia’isaskankin'blcnd i ol bhangra rhythmsand reggae chant in combination ysith I’uniabi taunts. .-\ll youclubbers. (l’()l I Marathon: Movin‘ (Ten)/Kenyatta: Love Again (41h & Broadway) 1993 should herald a rayc of recession and an upturn in growth for funk and grooyc. The remix man at the helm of the good ship funk isJoey Negro(aka Dave Lee). who has remixed these free-flow ing funk affairs. The bigger and better is Marathon (at least for the 38 minutes 58 seconds of miXeson the 12in). lIaiIingfrom Berlin. duo Marathon originally released it eighteen months ago. and since then it's been a massive underground hit but now it'savailable to all us lesser mortals. Ifyou don't groove. see your doctor. (PO)
