JAZZ MUSIC

Glasgow

I George Penman‘s Jazzmen Westbourne Music. Merchants House. 7 West George Street.227 5511. 12.45pm. £3(£2.50). A tribute to New Orleans jazz.

I Danish Radio Big Band MacRobert Arts Centre. Stirling University. 078661081. 7.30pm. See Tue 17.

Edinburgh

I Dizzy Gillespie At 75-The Bebop Band 1 Usher Hall. Lothian Road. 228 1 155. £9.50—£15. The great trumpeter‘s last couple of visits with big bands have not 3 lived up to expectation. but this return to

his roots in a smaller bebop outfit

promises better. Diz is no longer the fire-cater ofthe late 1940s. but makes up

for that with the musical experience ofa lifetime playing jazz. Just in case the

Grand Old Man flags a little. the band will include a little back-up in the form of Freddie Hubbard. Claudio Rodili, Wallace ; Roney, James Moody. and Slide Hampton.

as well as a stellar rhythm trio ofKenny ! Barron. Bob Cranshaw and Charlie Persip. Dizzy sounds in good enough fettle on Bebop and Beyond‘s recent Plays Dizzy Gillespie ( Enja) disc. which is released to coincide with the Silk Cut City Jazz tour.

I Cl'liCk Corea Elektric Band Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. Sauchiehall Street. 227

551 l . 8pm. £16. £12. £8. The second concert in the Famous Grouse season brings Chick Corea's super-slick five piece fusion outfit to Scotland for the first time. The band features the pianist on various synths and the like. with guitarist Frank Gambale. saxman Eric Marienthal. Dave Weekl on drums. and new recruit Jimmy Earl on bass. It is all a little tooneatly in-the-pocket for my tastes. but if fusion is your thing. then these guys are top ofthe ladder.
