We follow US Army assassin Sheen downriver and deeper into the Heart of Darkness ruled over by Brando‘s mad Colonel Kurtz. Alternater pretentious and visually overpowering (the Valkyries helicopter attack. for example). its grandiloquent folly somehow pierces right to the bone of the conflict. Edinburgh: Cameo.

A young man (Attal) hijacksa school bus in order to visit the woman he fell in love with while on holiday. ()n one level. Rochant‘s follow-up to A World Without Pity isan accessible and exciting heist picture done in a fairly Hollywood manner; on another. it manages to create genuine audience sympathy for its gun-toting protagonist. Evil robot versions of that most excellent duo totally kill our heroes. causing them to take on the Grim Reaper at party games. make a quick visit to Heaven and eventually win the day. A triumphant sequel. slightly more coherent than the bodacious original - in Bill and Ted terms. at least. Edinburgh: Cameo.

However. courtesy of a time-travelling telephone booth. the two dudes canter through the centuries on a breakneck refresher course where they meet up with the likes of Genghis Khan and Beethoven. Told largely itt flashback. the winner of the 1990 ()scar for Best Foreign Film traces young Salvatore‘s infatuation with his village cinema. and his growing friendship with its projectionist (played to perfection by Noiret). Essentially. it‘s Tornatore's lament for the joyous movie-going experience of his youth and a recognition of the price we pay for our maturity. Edinburgh: Filnthouse.

Thoroughly reprehensible and very funny early Almodovar has nightclub chanteuse Pascal fleeing her drug-addled existence to seek refuge in a rather unorthodox convent. where the nurts share out liberal amounts of controlled substances and the sexual peccadillo quotient is running high. The Sound ofMusit‘ it ain't. but even if the joke is stretched a little thin and the pacing uncertain. Pedro‘s aim as usual is to prick the complacencies ofour everyday morality. A psycho on the seven seas disturbs a young couple trying to get away from it all on a cruise alongthe Barrier Reef. First rate suspense follows. in this canny mix ofon-ship claustrophobia and wide open scascapes from Aussie new waver Noyce. Edinburgh: Cameo.

I The Deer Hunter ( 18) (Michael Cimino. US. 1978) Robert De Niro. Meryl Streep. Jott Savage. Jon Cazaie. 180 mins. The Vietnam war hasthe effect ofdisrupting the lives of a small steel town. as various friends go off to face the horrors ofwar and return with emotional scars. A daring triptych structure. the first part of which displays a rare sympathy for the traditions and rituals ofthc emigrant community. marks this out as a (‘intino movie. as he explores his favourite theme of American idealism being stretched almost to breaking point. Jean-Claude Dreyfus. 99 mins. in a sepia wasteland somewhere in the future. a butcher feeds his neighbours with the juicy joints of his lodgers. But when former clown Louison (Pinon) arrives and falls for his daughter. an underground vegetarian resistance group come

to the rescue. Hilarious blend of bizarre characters. slapstick and comic tension makes for the first true cult item of the 905. Edinburgh: Cameo.

I Dick Tracy ( PG) (Warren Beatty. US. 1990) Warren Beatty. Madonna. Al Pacino. Dustn Hoffman. 113 mins. Producer/director/star Beatty resurrects Chester Gould‘s vintage cop comic strip with original primary colours intact and engagineg misshapen crew of rubberized villains faithfully preserved. Madonna's brash floozy and Pacino‘s hantmy megaiomania enliven things from time to time. but the material remains so fossilised it‘s hard for all concerned to work up much of a head of steam.
