FRIDAY 17 Glasgow

I Mike Peters And The Poets 01 Justice King Tut‘s Wah Wah Hut, St Vincent Street, 221 5279. 9pm. £5. Ooh, the sincerity‘s killing us. The err-Alarm frontman returns to the fray (because, like, music isthc ultimate form of expression and communication with the kids, right?) with a band including ex-Shrickback drummer Martyn Baker.

I Buddha Grass Harbour, Jennller Fever and Wedgwood Una Briggait, Clyde Street. 9.30pm. £4.50 (£3). Tickets from Glasgow Fair, 550 2104, or Ticket Centre, Candleriggs, 227 5511. BGH are dull, MOR-style Americanised stomping and/or balladeering with enormous lighter-waving potential. Guaranteed to induce premature ageing tendencies in the

audience. A Tennenr’s Live! sponsored gig

to kick off the Glasgow Fair rock week at the Briggait.

I The Passkeepers Slow Club, Apollo, Renfrew Court, 332 6231. 9pm. Free. Another still-too-rare appearance from Glasgow’s most sublime, other-worldly combo, still wrestling to project their atmospheric mantras without the aid of their recently-departed drummer. Outside rock‘n‘roll, as they say.

I Blackout, Soul Drive and Snakebite Tudor Lodge Hotel, Bumbank Road, Hamilton, 0698 457277. 8pm. £1.

I Little Green Monkeys Cottier’s. Hyndland Road, 357 5827. 8.30pm. Free. I Brazil Legend‘s, Thorn Brae, Johnstone, 0505 35818. 9pm. Free.

Edinburgh

I Del Amitrl and Pele Playhouse Theatre, Greenside Place, 557 2590. 7.30pm. £9, £7 .50. The Dels return with a new bunch of hard-luck stories tucked under their sideburns. Their last tour showed that they were getting better at this thing called live performing all the time, so the punters should leave happy tonight despite the general moodiness of most of the band’s material. Pele will provide a dollop of cheerfulness, as they have been doing on the recent Heineken Festivals.

I Crush Zone Subway, Cowgate, 225 6766. Some former members of Call Me Clive in a new band which seemingly retains some of the danciness, but with a rougher edge. I Little vlolves Preservation Hall, Victoria Street, 226 3816. £1.50 after 9pm. Blues.

I The Hundred Negociants, Lothian Street, 225 6313. 10.15pm. Free.

SATURDAY 18 Glasgow

I Roxette SECC, Finnieston Quay, 248 3111). £14.50 plus booking fee. Tickets from Just The Ticket, Virgin, Union Street, 226 4679. Who buys Roxette records? They are the ultimate one-hit wonder bluepn’nt - inane duo with one

bouncy tune , stacks of crap lyrics and dress sense that flouts the terms of the Maastricht Treaty but they refuse to go away. And it's all your fault! Or maybe Abba‘s.

I Del Amitrl and Pete Barrowland, Gallowgate, 552 4601. 7.30pm. £8.50 plus booking fee. Tickets from Just The Ticket, Virgin, Union Street, 226 4679. See Fri 17. Unfortunate for these two bands that they have to compete with the weightier Del boys playing down the road, as their mid-Atlantic pop seems to have found a similar audience.

I Glasgow Songwriters Blackfriars, Bell Street, 552 5924. 9.30pm. Free. A fund-raising gig for Telethon.

I The Rebels Halt Bar. Woodlands Road, 332 1210. 9pm. Free.

I The Boogie Brothers, Baby Bones and Blackout Tudor Lodge Hotel, Bumbank Road, Hamilton, 0698 457277. 8pm. £1. The Boogie Brothers are on their Scottish tour, and Baby Bones were winners of Rockfest ’92.

I Live music Blackfriars, Bell Street, 552 5924.

Edinburgh

I Stockbridge Festival Jubilee Park, Stockbridge. 11am—7pm. 50p (25p). ln amongst the stalls, Punch and Judy shows and that sticky Velcro pursuit ‘Spider‘s Web‘, revellers can thrill to a selection of bands which includes The Vasily Rats, The Night Kitchen, Free Beer(a guaranteed crowd-puller with a name like that), The St Stephen Street Stompers and The Edinburgh Harmonica Band.

I Two Saints and The Unhinged Lord Darnley, West Port, 229 4341. 9pm. £3. From Boston, two former members of the late Johnny Thunders‘ band (from around the time he recorded In Cold Blood), Joe Mazzari and Simon Ritt, continue in the great man‘s tradition with some no-nonsense garage raunch. Support,The Unhinged. feature some of the usual suspects from the Offhooksfl‘hanes scene. I Biverhead Subway, Cowgate, 225 6766. The Edinburgh quartet follow up their ‘Haddit‘ single on the Avalanche offshoot Alva (the one that’s exclusively for Scottish signings) with another single in October, recorded at Fish‘s much-drooled-over studio in Haddington. No doubt, there will be a taster of it tonight.

Tickets from Glasgow Fair, 550 2104, or Ticket Centre, Candleriggs, 227 5511. A strange combination of folky hokeymkey from the Humpffs and pleasant jangly pop from the revitalized Linden Tree.

I Fjaere llilssen and Crazy People Cottier‘s, Hyndland Road, 357 5827. 8.30pm. Free. The popular soloist succumbs to the back-up treatment with her new band.

Tickets from Just The Ticket, Virgin, Union Street, 226 4679. Veterans of ye olde rock crossover scenario along with Living Colour, but largely unsung in these parts until recently. Milw-

I Diana Brown and Barrie ll Sharpe King Tut‘s Wah Wah Hut, St Vincent Street, 221 5279. 9pm. £5. An eight-piece groove machine will, as the single predicts, eat you alive.
