I Naked Lunch (18) Peter Weller stars in David Cronenberg‘s complex and freewheeling interpretation of the Burroughs tale. Weller plays William Lee, taking a nightmare trip into Interzone, a warped world of sinister spies and hallucinations. Confusing. alarming, entertaining and just plain absurd by turns, but you can‘t help but admire the imagination that has gone into it. (First Independent)

I JFK (15) Oliver Stone‘s complex and wordy conspiracy theory grabbed all the headlines earlier in the year, but as a piece of cinema it is flawed. As a piece of historical research it doesn't exactly stand up either, Stone being rather selective with the evidence he assembles. Like the same director‘s The Doors it‘s a personal indulgence rather than a film with an audience in mind. (Warner)

I My Own Private Idaho (18) Keanu Reeves and River Phoenix star in Gus Van Sant’s admirable left-field drama, taking in narcolepsy, gay prostitution and identity. Phoenix plays street hustler Mike, prone to falling unconscious at awkward moments. Reeves plays Scott, the object of his desires. (Fox) I High Heels ( 18) Almodovar's usual restrained stuff, this time in the shape ofa murderous triangle

between a mother, her daughter and son-in-law. Victoria Abril is excellent as the TV presenter who confesses live on air that she killed her husband. (Columbia Tristar)

I Basic Deception (15) (Columbia Tn'star)

I Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare (18) Flogging a dead formula I’m afraid. (Guild)

I Taking Back My Lite ( 15) (Warner)

I The Night Is Young ( 15) Leos Carax’s enigmatic thriller caused a huge stir on its cinema release in 1986. It‘s set loosely in the future where mankind is threatened by a disease contracted by ‘making love to those you don‘t love‘. Denis Lavant plays Alex. a small-time card-sharp who falls in with a gang struggling for control ofthe scrum that cures the disease. (Artificial Eye £15.99)

I La Belle Hoiseuse- Divertlmento (15) A ‘director's cut‘ ofJaequcs Rivette‘s acclaimed study of a painter and his inspiration. Michel Piccoli stars as the artist who becomes obsessed with his new model Marianne. played by Emmanuelle Beart. (Artificial Eye £15.99)
