V ALBUMS l

I John Moran: The Henson 3 Family-An Opera (Point I Music) You don‘t really , have to look beyond that title. or the mock Hieronymus Bosch cover (with explicit language warning sticker). to know that this is an odd one. A highly subjective meditation on the Manson family. it is cast in a minimalist-into-rock mode with lots of weird electronic effects. and features singers like Iggy Pop and Terre Roche in a bizarre mish~mash of styles. Moderately interesting. but maybe only once. (Kenny Mathieson)

I Ursula Oppens: For Ursula (Music 8. Arts) Pianist Ursula Oppens is a relentless searcher-out of underplayed music. and this second volume of contemporary American piano music is every bit as good as the first. It ranges from Tobias Picker‘s short mood piece ‘Old and Lost Rivers‘ through to John Harbison‘s substantial ‘Piano Sonata No l'. with Conlon Nancarrow‘s ‘Two Canons For Ursula‘ and pieces by Frederic Rzewski. Anthony Davis and Charles Wuorinen. (Kenny Mathieson)

us into new realms of electro-metal ecstasy? Well. no. but it‘s not bad. Samples and sequenced beats combine with live guitars to give an interesting. powerful sound. All that‘s missing is a certain style shown by many ofthe bands ofthe ‘industrial' school. a label Die Krupps reject. This is perhaps most noticeable on their cover of Metallica‘s ‘One‘. an accomplished new version which nevertheless smacks of Casio keyboard in places. (Gavin Inglis)

V SINGLES ;

their live stand-by. Van‘s ‘Moondancc‘. They may not be as fat. bald and cantankerous as the song‘s daddy. but somehow they pull it off. Pele: they‘ve shot. they‘ve scored. (CMcL)

I Butterfly Child: Juice

I (Rough Trade Singles Club)

A potential disaster in the shape of those Peter Hooton-esque vocals. A jumble of out-of-control drums. A melee of would-be ambience and aimless farting about. A good idea to check out their contribution to the latest issue of CD-magazine Volume to hear Butterfly Child get their weird-beard. deep-dream craft right. (CMcL)
