which is bollocks of course. It’s just that I’ve always thought it was a book about sex and money really, and the social comedy was just a surface veneer. It’s a very strong book and ifI did an adaptation I wanted to bring out those elements, to remind the audience that these were real people with real bodies, panting hearts and sweat and muscles and erections.’
The same friend who was so forthright about Davies’s sex scenes also pointed out that all his work follows two simple formats: ‘Young boy goes into strange place’ and ‘Woman stands centre stage and puts herself about.‘ B. Monkey includes both themes, but above everything else it’s an extended love letter to an extreme and dangerous woman, a startling literary creation, who, Davies admits, reveals as much about the author’s own feelings as his imagination. ‘I do find myself very attracted to and drawn to women who take risks, who are rather extreme emotionally,’ he says. ‘Obviously they must appeal to something reciprocal which I have myself. In fiction, one ofthe things I’m doing is exploring things I’m interested in about my own life and relationships, but taking things to much further extremes.’
