Fellini's wife Masina is unforgettable as a simple-minded girl in love with larger-than-life cichs strongman Zampano (Quinn). who dies of a broken heart when he kills the gentle tightrope-walker (Basehart) who had befriended her. Painful story of loneliness and isolation whose vividly seedy small-town backgrounds never allow sentimentality to set in. Edinburgh: Filmltouse.

I Tetsuo 2: The Bodyharnnier I I 8) (Shinya Tsukamoto. Japan. 1992) Tomoroh Taguclii. Nobu Kanaoka. Shinya Tsukainoto. 83 ntins. More sophisticated than its eye-opening predecessor. Tsukamoto‘s latest post~m0derll body horror does have a plot something to do with the murder of a child and the father's subsequent mutations through rage. However. It is the relentlessly violent imagery that most sticks in the mind. Edinburgh: Cameo.

I Thelma & loulse (15) (Ridley Scott. L's. 1991) Susan Sarandon. Geena Davis. Harvey Keitel. Michael .‘vladsen. 129 ntins. The buddy/road movie genres are tumed on their heads as Sarandon and Davis grasp the steering wheel attd head off leaving a trail of nturder attd mayhem in their wake. On one level. the film is the critical catalyst that had the feminists cheering and put the stars on the cover of Time magazine; just as importantly. it‘s an accessible piece of entertainment with excellent central performances. A part-Indian FBI agent (Kilnter) is sent t South Dakota‘s Pine Ridge Reservation to investigate the unsolved murder of a local Sioux Locals both help and hinder him. forcing him to come to terrns with his heritage while discovering that the nturder is only part of a wider picture of corruption. The film's basis in fact makes for consistently absorbing viewing. showing the plight of Native Americans today rather than in some idealised Costnerland past.
