1 19 mins. TWO New York students visiting the Deep South are charged with a murder they most certainly didn't commit. Enter rookie lawyer Vinny Gambini (Pesci). and it's a test of can-do Italian-American guile against the old-fashioned Southem gentility of Fred Gwynne‘s curmudgeonly judge. A howlingly funny character comedy that at last lets Pesci carry a movie on his own. Thoroughly recommended. Glasgow: Mercat.

In his second outing as director. famed producer Winkler fails to exploit the material. never knowing whether to play it as comedy. drama or violent urban thriller. After Dark) tackles cliches of buddy partnerships. macho bullshit and thriller shoot-outs with fresh energy. creating a tenific movie that has one foot in reality. the other in an absurdist world. Middleweight boxing champ Jake La Motta finds it difficult to sustain his early success and as his career fades. he declines into a travesty of his former self. Redford. US. 1992) Craig Sheffer. Brad Pitt. Tom Skenitt. 124 mins. A the. lyrical piece by director Redford describing the love and loyalty of two contrasting brothers in Montana early this century. Based on Norman Maclean's semi- autobiographical novel. it fuses the Scots Presbyterian lifestyle of American settlers with an true understanding of nature. Forster novel about a prissy young Iinglish girl who falls in love in romantic Italy. but with an unconventional young man who seems not quite the right thing at all. Respectful but funny adaptation dissecting the emotional paucity of the linglish middle classes. Edinburgh: Cameo.

I "in Sacrifice ( 15) (Andrei Tarkovsky. Sweden. 1986) lirland Josephson. Susan Fleetwood. Allan lidwall. 149 mins. Set on a remote island and focusing on a 24-hour period of action. Tarkovsky‘s final film concerns itself with one man's response to the oncoming apocalypse. as Josephson offers his life in a supreme act of atonement that the world be restored. An overwhelmingly poetic experience that forms a fitting testament to a remarkable career. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.

A blind. alcoholic ex- serviceman and a scholarship college boy spend Thanksgiving Weekend in New York and find themselves in a series of funny and moving adventures which finally lead them to come to terms with their true selves. ()verlong in its opening and closing scenes. this is still one terrific movie. with what is possibly Pacino's best performance in a distinguished career. Watch out. ()scar night. Bogard found one of his best screen roles in this now dated class drama as a manservant forcing role-reversal in the home of his decadent master (Fox). Absurdity and tension is heightened by Harold Pinter\ inimitable dialogue. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.

Allen is the innocent Kleinrnan. forced tojoin a vigilante group when a serial strangler terroriscs an anonymous mittel-Iiuropean town in the 1920s. A showcase for the writer/director's talents for dark tragedy and one-line slapstick. Glasgow: GI-‘I‘.

I The Shining ( 18 I (Stanley Kubrick. L'S. 198(1) Jack Nicholson. Shelly Duvall. Philip Stone. 146 mins. Kubrick's overwrought. overlong horror film dispenses with much of the psychic apparatus of Stephen King's novel to concentrate on the deeper horror of a family turning in on itself. Nicholson. with all the stops out. is bug- eyed and demonic as the writer cracking up violently in an isolated hotel. and the final scenes are. literally.chi11ing. lidinburgh: Cameo. I Singles ( 12) (Cameron Crowe. US. 1992) Bridget Fonda. Campbell Scott. Kyra Sedgwick. Matt Dillon. 9(1mins. The way it's been sold you'd think it was some total guitar hardcore odyssey vibe. but in fact it's a honey-coated romance that just happens to take place in Seattle. There‘s a high recognition factor for twentysomcthings in the audience as they watch the ensemble cast find its way around misdirected crushes. parties from hell and crap gigs. Structured as a monumental relay (each character briefly appears. meets the next. and so on). it has a loose. experimental. almost jazzy fomiat that you‘ll either love or hate. A sure-fire
