The pianist has introduced an element of confusion by playing with different combinations under this name. but this particular line-up is the definitive one. with Phil Bancroft on saxophone. George Lyall on bass. and Tom Bancroft on drums. Alert. imaginative and exciting contemporary jazz.

I Marilyn Middleton Pollock‘s Jazz Me Blues Paisley Arts Centre. New Street. 887 1010. 8pm. £4 (£2.50). Set in an unnamed railway station waiting room somewhere in America. the show blends blues. jazz. ragtime and vaudeville in an evocation of one singer's dreams of making it big in the 20s.

The saxman is a frequent and highly popular visitor to Scotland. but there will be an extra air of anticipation for this one in the Silk Cut City Jazz series. given the presence of the powerhouse American rhythm team of Charnett Moffett and Dennis Chambers. as well as guitarist Bobby Broom and pianist Jerome Weidman. One of the strongest performers on the Scottish traditional jazz and blues scene. singer Fionna Duncan leads an excellent trio featuring Brian Kellock (piano). Ronnie Rae (bass) and Tony McLennan (drums).

I Claire Martin Queen‘s Hall. Clerk Street. 668 2019. 8.30pm. £8.50—£7 (concessions £4 on door if available). We previewed this excellent young singer last issue. but she returns to Scotland to complete her dates here. and make her Queen's Hall debut in the process. The band line-up is a little different. with saxman lain Ballamy replacing Jim Mullen. Robin Aspland standing in for Jonathan Gee on piano, and Mark Taylor taking over Clark Tracey's drum seat alongside bassman Arnie Somogyi. It‘s a shame that she can‘t have her first-choice outfit for the tnost prestigious gig of the tour. but she has come up with some fine replacements.

Warren is a regular on the international jazz circuit these days. but his wee brother Alan. a clarinettist. makes his Scottish debut at the Society in two weeks time.
