I Fionna Duncan (luartet Jazz at The Tron. Tron Cellar Bar. 9 Hunter Square. High Street. 220 1550. 9pm. £3 (£2). The singer made her name on the traditional and Dixieland end of the jazz spectrum with bands like the Clyde Valley Stompers. but is looking to move into a more mainstream. standards-oriented mode these days. She could hardly have made a better choice of piano player for such a project than Brian Kellock. and with John Russell providing rhythm guitar. Ronnie Rae on bass. and Tony McLennan on drums. there should be no shortage of swing. It's a shame it coincides with the final night of the Leith Festival. but 1 know where I‘ll be.

I Leith Jan Festival Today‘s gigs are listed below; day time sessions run from 12.30—2pm. evening sessions from 7.30—1 1pm. There will also be a number of marching bands on the streets from 2.15—6.30pm. Admission is free.

Edinburgh

I Alan Barnes and Brian Kellock Trio Jazz at The Tron. Tron Cellar Bar. 9 Hunter Square. High Street. 220 1550. 9pm. £4 (£3.50). 1 can highly recommend this chance to hear saxophonist Alan Barnes. a player who is equally at home in mainstream jazz (he had a lengthy stint with Humphrey Lyttelton's band which ended late last year to allow him to concentrate on a solo career) and in a range of considerably more modern styles. and is a strong. imaginative player in arty of them. He isjoined by Brian Kellock at the piano in what should be a fascinating meeting of tnusical minds to end the current Edinburgh Jazz Project season at the Tron. The EJP will take a break in July. but return with gigs during the festival. a prelude to their own autumn season in September.
