A chronicle of courage and ingenuity that avoids becoming as overwhelmingly heart-wanning as one might have feared. TV weatherman Phil Conners (Murray) finds himself in the back of beyond. trapped in an ever-repeating single day. Partying and babe- chasing leads to serious romancing as he goes after his producer (MacDowell). Murray's cuddly sarcasm stops the movie from becoming the kind of moralising mush that surrounds so many of his contemporaries. At last. a Hollywood comedy that is really ftrnny. Glasgow: Odeon. The romantic tale of a young boy who resolves to marry a hairdresser. and in eccentric middle age does just that. According to director Lcconte. the film ‘is not autobiographical. although it really ought to have been'. since the boy‘s resolution is one he himself made. but failed to keep. A witty. sexy and eccentric movie with dark undercurrents from the director of Monsieur Ilire. Edinburgh: Cameo.

Sexy vampire Marie (Nikita's Parillaud) is environmentally aware enough just to feast on bad guys. btrt this has its drawbacks when a new Mafia member of the Undead decides that now he's more powerful than ever. Made in 3-D. this prototype ‘friendly alien' movie broke some new ground. but also harbours some pretty familiar stereotypes (tolerant. misundersttxxl scientist. shoot-first-ask- questions-later lawman) and sortie pretty naff acting. But there's are signs here of Arnold's talent for atmosphere and composition (he went on to make The Creature/mm the Black Lagoon and The Incredible Shrinking Man). Eidnburgh: Cameo.

Set in the early I970s. this downbeat hut appealing tale centres on a l2-year-old boy trying to come to terms with his mother's recent death and his father‘s blend of alcoholic mourning attd working as hos. on a late-night horror show. The kids are refreshingly free frotn the sentimentality of other would-be weepies. and DeVito is given a bit more space to extend his range. Just manages to stay this side of the TV movie divide. The latest from Gillian (My Beautiful Career) Armstrong has some of the most believable characters you'll Irave seen on screen for ages. while script. cast and director chime in resonant harmony. Long-awaited and tnuch needed biopic of Black political activist Malcolm X charts the life of the man from street hood to Muslem leader. An epic worthy of the name. both thematically and cinematically. as Lee brings the integrity and intelligence of a tnuch-misunderstood figure to the masses. A tribute to the kinship of the Mediterranean peoples. this I992 Oscar winner carries sentimentality and knowing humour in equal amounts. Edinburgh: Cameo.

Jeanette Winterson‘s adaptation of her first novel follows the rites of passage of youngster Coleman‘s rebellious homosexual passion against the strait-laced Lancashit‘e religious environment maintained by her evangelical mum McEwan. A grouchy old artist sets out to paint the quince tree in his garden and a couple of his mates come round. Sounds pretty deadly. but the viewer soon finds watching the artist at work utterly cotnpelling. to the extent that the tiniest event becomes a crucial incident. A majestic film experience.
