We have road movies, so why not road plays? They certainly seem to be in fashion after 7:84’s adaptation of The Grapes of Wrath and now the latest Traverse production, the Scottish premiere of Antoine 0’ Flatharta’s Grace in America. ‘lie’s writing about real geographical journeys from Ireland to America and vice versa,’ explains director Philip Howard, fresh from the critical success of Brothers of Thunder. ‘On top of that it takes the form or a road movie in that the two younger characters are going on their homage trip to Graceland.’

But 0’ Flatharta’s concerns go turther than Elvis. A native Gaelic

(this is his tirst English-language play), 0’ Flatharta has an instinctive awareness or the importance or language and culture. llis play, at turns funny and serious, looks at two

. couples: the young boys trying to

? escape Ireland to pursue their own personal American dream, and an elderly couple who emigrated to the States in 1947, taking with them visions of a romanticised Ireland. ‘lt’s a play about the history of emigration,’ says Howard, pointing out that the Irish have a very particular

I relationship with America. ‘One or the ! reasons we’re touring this play to the I Highlands and Islands is that the

I theme of emigration and what happens to native language has resonance there. Many Scots and

English don’t fully appreciate that.’

0’ Flatharta, Ireland’s leading Irish-

speaker lrom the west coast of Ireland

CULTURE SHOCK

Flag day: the Irish-American

language playwright, is fervent about the survival or his native tongue, but at the same time he is obsessed about American culture. ‘lle wants to be American,’ says lloward. ‘But the play

looks at it in much greater clarity. The Irish-American story is partly about sentiment. The play doesn’t criticise that, in a way that it is very easy to do, because it is its own culture with

i its own worth. Irish-American

sentimental culture is a living and thriving entity and you can’t just lambast it.’ (Mark Fisher)
