I HORSE SALES Sat 23. 9.30am—2.30pm. Springwood Park. Kelso. Free. Look the gift horses in the mouth at this annual sale of ponies and horses of all classes. First under the hammer are the tack and saddlery at 9.30am followed by the horses at noon. then the ponies and finally the horse boxes at 2pm. Besides the selling ring, there is plenty to see and do with several stands and a restaurant.

Scotland’s oldest inhabited house has added a new gallery to show modem and contemporary an. The first exhibition is by the Norwegian Jan Eric Willgohs while Benthe Norheim's sculptors will be exhibited around the grounds. Traquair is an excellent venue for a day out. with the grounds only ticket (£1.50/£1) allowing access to the very excellent tea room (licensed to sell the heady Traquair Ale: not for drivers!)

I SEABI O CITY Tue 3. 2—5pm. St Abbs Head. Nature Reserve Carpark. Northfreld Farm, St Abbs. £2. (Also every Tuesday in May). During May the cliffs of St Abbs Head are thick with nesting seabirds as they gather at one of Europe‘s biggest

mainland seabird colonies. Tile sight is quite spectacular. Bring strong footwear and binoculars if you have them for this ranger lead walk.
